I have rewatched that clip a few times and I would say probably the lady who jumps into the pool is an audience plant, for a number of reasons:
1. The shots either side of it show the contestants congregated by the poolside, but they are totally absent when the lady jumps in.
2. The camera tracks her all the way from the audience to the pool, suggesting that it was pre-planned.
3. She does not appear to be wearing any shoes. |

By Ben - Thu 16/03/23 13:56:38 GMT Variations of this show have been broadcast in Argentina (1997) , Australia (1994), Denmark (1994), France (1995-1999), Greece (1998-2000), Indonesia (2004), Italy (1994-2003), Netherland (1995), Norway (1994-1996), Poland (2000), Portugal (1996-1998), Spain (1995-1996), Sweden (1996), United Kingdom (1996-1999), United States (1995), Turkey (1995-1997) and Vietnam (2018-2020). There are a few very poor quality clips to be found on YouTube which might give some clues why the German version is different from the others.
STUDIO SET DESIGN
From looking at the clips, it seems the layout of the studio has much to do with it. In most variations of Man-O-Man, the pool is situated above the audience, as it appears to have been built as a freestanding structure on the studio floor, with the audience below. In the German version, the pool appears to be built into the studio floor so that the audience are on the same level, and are seated around three sides of the pool. Access to the water is therefore easier.
DUNKING OF WINNER
In the German version, the tradition is that the winner gets dunked into the pool by audience members at the end of the programme. Often a group of women grab him and rush to the poolside, but the momentum carries some of them into the water also.
FULLY CLOTHED POOL PARTIES
It is well known that Germans have a fondness for fully clothed pool parties. They are not the only country, but their wetlook events are notable. The programme just morphs into a pool party.
AUDIENCE PLANTS
A small number of professional actresses may have been "planted" in the audience in the early episodes with the instruction to jump into the pool at the end of the show. Once the programme starts airing on television, future audience members will think this is normal, and some will always automatically consider jumping into the pool. |

By NCgreg231LC2 - Wed 15/03/23 21:42:20 GMT Now i am curious about why this only happened in Germany? (well... perhaps THIS question is already partially answered?)
How did it start? Did the Gameshow hosts encourage the ladies to jump in the pool? Why would there only be one spontaneous jumper after one show, and dozens after a different show?
(if anyone knows the answers, or even can offer speculative suggestions?) |

By Toby - Wed 15/03/23 16:30:03 GMT The Man-o-Man gameshow (Mann-o-Mann in Germany) was originally an Australian TV programme that was franchised in about 20 countries around the world during the 1990s. It was a kind of male talent and beauty contest in which eliminated contestants were pushed fully clothed into an on-set swimming pool.
I am only aware of audience members (who were all female) jumping into the pool at the end of the German version. It appeared to be random and spontaneous, without much thought of the consequences. In some shows just a single lady went in, and in others it ended up with more than a dozen. They jumped into the water in the regular clothes thay had been wearing to the show, including shoes, and had to make their way home soaked.
The Germans are renowned for their fully clothed pool parties in particular, and historically their gameshows in general, so I doubt any of them would have felt at all ashamed. |
In reply to Message (93957.1.1.1) none?
By NCgreg231LC2 - Wed 15/03/23 10:00:10 GMT Website: https://tinyurl.com/janetjulia i say none for several reasons...
1) In the case of the German people, my perception is that few of them would feel ashamed of revealing more of themselves than they had intended
2) I have only seen those ladies voluntarily jumping into the pool, not like they were pushed/thrown in OR accidentally fell in?
3) I have seen several ladies who might hold their arms across their bosom's to cover their exposure, yet did not give off a shame/embarrassment vibe... so, they didn't FEEL bad, but yet took action that they felt the needed to?
In conclusion, i imagine they cherished the experience! |

By Malvineous - mrnemesis@ntlworld.com Mon 13/03/23 09:05:59 GMT Scenes like these leave me wondering how many of the women were not actually “properly” dressed for the occasion, i.e. whose clothes revealed more of themselves than they had intended. Did that leave them feeling any shame or embarrassment, or did they just cherish the experience? |
