I used to do both of the hobbies in the title, neither is expensive, and I rarely came home dry! And I remember paddling my canoe just off the beach on nice summer days and watching the beachgoers being tempted into the water a bit too far.... I really regret that I didn't keep these hobbies up when I moved away from the coast. And getting wet still seems to be part of the fun with canoes - just a year ago I was at the tiller of a rented narrowboat, following a group of canoeists along the Kennet and Avon canal, when one of the group came paddling rapidly back towards me and asked me to stop a minute because "we've got a swimmer" - and when I was given the 'all clear' to pass here was one of the women with her clothes dripping wet after having tipped herself out of her canoe!
But if neither of these hobbies appeals to you, just hiking (at least in a wet country like Britain) gives plenty of opportunity for splashing through rivers or similar if you choose an adventurous enough route. I do try to avoid getting wet (though keeping dry is not always an available option!) until towards the end of a long walk, since I find that wet socks tend to make blisters more likely if you've got another 10 miles to go. But once I'm nearing the end, if its a warm day, 'oops, how did that happen?'!
Which reminds me of an utterly surreal experience in the "waterfall country" in the south-west of the Brecon Beacons in Wales. It was a warm day and I was coming down one riverside path to the junction with another river which I would follow back up to a good waterfall for getting wet (you can walk behind the falls at that one, or you can have a splash in the river below it....). And coming up the path alongside the main river, timed exactly right for us to meet at the junction, were two young men and two young ladies, all dressed in black jeans and black tee-shirts and jackets.
And as we approached one another (but were still several metres apart), one of the girls waved towards the deep pool where the two rivers came together, looked straight at me, and said; "Coming in? You look like you'll be up for it - these....." [the last word said in a disparaging tone, with a dismissive wave at her companions, making it quite clear that they were not 'up for it'] Of course I was totally 'up for it' in theory. Especially with a decent-looking young lady fully clothed in black (black looks really sexy when wet). But I was so astonished at being asked a question so completely appropriate to my fetish, by somebody who was surely still too far away even to really know what I looked like, and equally astonished at meeting these very urban-seeming people here, 3 miles down a rough path from the nearest road, that I just grinned stupidly, said "no thanks", and hurried on along the path away from them.
I replayed the whole improbable encounter over and over in my head for months afterwards - did I really look like the kind of person who liked getting wet fully clothed even from 5 yards away? - was she a mind-reader (she was dressed a bit like a witch!)? - had she maybe met me when I was getting wet at Barry or Porthcawl beaches, and recognised me immediately even though I didn't remember her? I still find the whole thing spooky to think about (and I still regret my reaction).... |
In reply to Message (82577) Discussion: Good hobbies for wetlook?
By Anonymous - Wed 09/09/20 17:54:51 GMT What kinds of hobbies/activities are good for wetlook fans? I have been thinking about potential environments where one can get wet/muddy without no one asking in surprise. Running in the rain is good but only for sport clothes, ATV (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jiQFqVkyG4&list=FLpYV-HG03lorFBW5g1Nsymw&index=1161&t=34s) and riding (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQPyjbRvwkY) requires too large investments - other ideas? |
