I might give that program a try — it knows HFS+ and I have an old HFS+ drive I need to recover. All the files are intact, it's just the directory database that's hosed. The only trouble is, it's IDE, and my only IDE PC is a small form factor PC with a laptop CD-ROM drive, so I may need to scavenge an old school master/slave IDE cable. (I used to have the USB adapter board and base panel off an external IDE hard drive where the drive had failed, but that seemed to vanish when moving office.) The drive will also need power, and I'm already splitting the only Molex cable (to the HDD) two ways to power the AMD video card I added! That also stop me opening the case very far!

Regarding the WD My Passport Ultra, it's hard to say. The failure rate for the USB to IDE/SATA adapter inside the unit is higher than that of the drives themselves. On older drives, you could just remove the drive and connect it directly to a computer. However, the newer ones have the USB adapter built directly onto the drive PCB, so if that fails, you may need to exchange the whole controller PCB with that of an identical drive.

The answer depends entirely on what's failed and how, and it's the sort of thing where you'd do better off taking it to someone to look at.

and don't even waste your time on anything else. had the same problem, and after several days of intense search I've given photorec a chance. it recovered everything from my disk with partition table wiped out, however the only problem is that it would scatter your files across many different folders in more or less random order. but you'll get your data back. good luck.

It appears my external hard drive has gotten some bad/corrupted sectors and I'm terrified I might lose my entire wetlook collection of over 10 years. Does anyone have any good recommendations of hard drive recovery software or anything? I've run chkdsk and my computer won't access it. It's a WD My Passport Ultra, It'll let me use the password to unlock it but after that none of my computers will let me open it. Please help.
