I fully agree on the Tablet comment. This forum works perfect on a tablet where the UMD forum is a really pain in the ass... I never visit that on my tablet.

In the beginning I have visited UMD as often as I visited this forum but over the years I have stopped visiting UMD and didn't stop visiting here. I don't exactly know why but it's the fact... So I can understand....

Keep up this very good forum!

Interesting...

Especially when you consider that UMD defines itself with a larger scope - messy as well as wetlook, where this forum defines itself as wetlook only (despite the "off-topic" messy posts).

You'd expect audience size to have some connection to scope... the finer the niche, the smaller the audience. One might also expect that "open" (non-membership) forums will have greater popularity than membership-based forums, because its less of a hassle for a new visitor to render his/her two-cents worth.

The shift you describe could have any number of causes, and may be a combination. Perhaps some recent tweak makes a commonly-used feature just a little less convenient. Maybe there is growing reluctance to participate in membership-driven forums. Maybe it's part of the shift from desktop/laptop computing to smartphones and iPads (at least for non-business purposes) and UMD is somehow less smartphone or iPad-friendly than this forum, if any of them are at all.

It is true, this forum is not only more successful in terms of traffic than any other forum in the wet & messy genre, it is now ranked number 1 as the most visited site of any kind  in the wet & messy world, and now beats the UMD forum for traffic too. Both UMD and this forum were created in 1998, and historically over the last 14 years UMD has always led this forum in traffic rankings, but for some reason UMD's traffic has slipped in the last 6 month or so while this forums traffic has remained constant and now has overtaken UMD to gain the number one spot.

The data is all here on our Topwam rankings site.

http://topwam.com/toplist.php

This data is gathered independently from the Alexa traffic rankings site (which is owned by Amazon.com --so the rankings data is not influenced by anybody from the wam world).

For years UMD has always held the number one spot cos their forum has all the bells and whistles and features that this forum does not have...but for some weird reason UMD's traffic has been going downhill in the last 6 months while this forum's traffic has remained constant. I am pretty sure I know the reason why this wetlook forum ranks number 1 and the Styx wetlook forum is number 8 in the rankings.....and the owners of that forum know the reasons too....i.e. this forum allows candid media to be posted and also focuses on Youtube links a lot, while the Styx wetlook forum has always banned candid videos and does not encourage youtube postings....and that was their decision and perogative to do that.....so this forum is much more diverse and liberal, whereas the Styx wetlook forum is mostly focused on modelled wetlook only....and they prefer things that way.

The real mystery to me is why UMD's traffic has dropped off so much in the last 6 months....cos this forum's traffic has remained constant.....so this is like a top of the line Mercedes that is running out of gas...and gets overtaken by a more fuel efficient pickup truck....ha ha

True, there is a lot of freedom here.

The downside you identified is actually an absence of accountability, which is what a membership system would create, even if only in a small way. Being accountable for your words doesn't deprive you of the freedom to express yourself, but perhaps it prompts you to adequately consider the effect those words will have on others before you utter them.

Because it's open, with no tedious joining or registering rigmarole. Even a lurker may like to say "thank you" for something especially good; a casual visitor may make a contribution.

The downside is you sometimes get comedians making a nuisance of themselves, but on balance free speech works best.
