almost every time there is a major problem on the forum, you are somehow involved. Yes this guy might be a bit of a jerk posting baptism videos, but you are being even worse by provoking him.

Please stop it, and leave his video posts alone. How is deleting his VALID posts going to do anything apart from wind him up ???

Please get a life yourself, and leave it alone !!!

I do not want to have to waste another couple of days to sort out a mess that is stirred up by you.

What is worse, is that you don't even let me know you are starting this up again. I only find out once a situation has got completely out of hand. Luckily you are not a diplomat else your country would be constantly at war !!!

There are plenty of idiots out there, why bother to pick on this one, just if he gives the odd thumbsdown to a post ???

When I stepped into the mess you had created the other week, the problem had been taken in hand. Now you are starting this fight up again.

IF I implement logins, then it will be a lot for work for me initially, and mostly unneeded, and will annoy a lot of the regular visitors, so I am LOATHED to do it just because YOU are having a fight over a few thumbsdown, what's the big deal ?

his multiple post per day were a couple of weeks ago. He is now only posting 1 a day. You then you started deleting them !

Checking his IP and posts, he posts plenty of thumbUP to things he likes as well as the occasional thumbDOWN.

I see no point in fussing over a few thumbsdown to XXX, which others object to on occasion as well. You are becoming over zealous towards him. The point of SPAM marking stuff that I have given you the ability to do, is to remove strongly offensive remarks or abuse, not the occasional thumbs down or valid post.

IF there is a problem on the forum, with someone posting too much etc, then I want to deal with it properly, not in a provocative way. If you had informed me of the issue then I could deal with it. Yes, I don't monitor the forum all the time, and I do appreciate you removing some crap, but this seems to escalate with you far too often.

In my opinion, it is if far better to show people the error of their ways and reform them, than to start a war. Do you not remember the guy a few months back that was posting all those short URLs to his video site. After discussing his issues (again caused by having his 'valid' posts deleted), he then was more reasonable, and then went away...

... this is the modern world, you cannot win by brute force. Even if we completely locked down the forum with logins etc, anyone who got suitable annoyed could just launch a DDOS attack to bring the forum down anyway... It is nearly always far better to talk to your 'enemies' and convert/persuade/educate them than to fight.

If you and MK want to go off and set up your own forum, using standard, boring (but 'fully functional') forum code, then please do so... oh wait, you have and everyone still comes to mine...

Bottom line is, that even with the OCCASIONAL issue, please LIKE the open format of my forum. I have absolutely no intention of switch the forum format. There are dozens of duplikit forums out there, I have far more complaints from you and MK about the format than I have from ALL the other people combined.

IF I want to block this idiot, then I will simply block the IP range for wanadoo in SW France, BUT I chose instead to deal with him PROPERLY, not to beat him over the head with a stick.

From all I can see, he has taken my advice... he now posts once a day, at most, yes he puts the odd (simple) thumbsdown to XXX stuff, big deal, he doesn't do some long post or email that I have to read, reply to, or act upon, and he puts quite a few thumbsup to stuff he likes, which is a lot more than most people do.

If you choose to think that me reforming him means I have somehow 'lost' then you are much mistaken.

IF he goes out of control again, then it will be because you, or someone else has been deleting his valid posts !!!

I don't care if I do, sound a little self important, I've put the time and effort into wetlook and this forum to deserve it, Nigel visits here once every now and then, look how long it took for the spam to be removed once I stopped deleting it!

For him to come here now and go along with all the claims he is the biggest thing for wetlook without again acknowledging that it is the contributions to this forum that makes it what it is is insulting and the way he spoke to me by private e-mail just goes to show what a lack of respect he has for me and other contributors.

Shall I post his e-mail to me so you can see what I mean?

We need a forum run by someone who has the interest to visit here more than once a week, with a team of moderators to ensure everyone is treated fairly and that offensive posts are romoved quicker than they are here.  I'm sure Nigel is just too busy with his life to make that commitment, I just wish he'd hand over the reigns to someone with a little more time and interest!  As this forum was a replacement for an established forum many years ago, it is a difficult task to try to start a new forum from fresh, which is why it is something no one has wanted to try in the past, but, I think the right type of forum with the right type of rules would work!

I don't even know why Nigel continues to cling onto this forum, he's to busy to put any decent time into it, by his own admission!

I'm sorry, but "e-mail me to report the problem" is not good enough!

Another 4 weeks re-writing code!

And several sessions of code tweaking to re-write the scripts that look for key words that spammers use.

So what about two months worth of work over how many years?  Seven or Eight?

As for the hosting issue, well, you have been offered alternative free hosting by others.

You require your users to moderate for you by reporting the spam by e-mail and the whole thing is driven by others who contribute their time and effort into contributing and searching for wetlook.

I am not going to kiss your ass like others and will not be shot down by your arrogant sense of self importance!

As I said this forum would be NOTHING but a page with your banners at the top, if it wasn't for those that have spent time contributing and producing media and links for this forum.  Supporting this forum!  The amount of actual work you have done is minimal by comparisan.

For quite a while now, I have been policing this forum, deleting a lot of the spam that has made its way here, in addition to which I have been contributing and supporting you and this forum for years!

So we have had a particularly previlent troll, that your systems can't cope with, I have spent lots of my own time deleting his threads and Thumbs down replies.   It was even me that suggested you add captcha, which has stopped this guy from pushing all the content three pages back again.

Your reaction to this was to threaten to BLOCK me for provoking him????  

WTF, so you and your forum can't control the troll, so you take it out on me???

Now I expect some bad feedback for writing this and I'm sure it will make me a little unpopular, but I don't care!

That is how I feel!

Well, I've always been opposed to a login for many reasons, the main one being that I want this forum to be open and inclusive. I hate that society and the internet is getting more and more 'locked down'. Maybe I am trying to live in a utopian world, so what ? Wouldn't we all want to live in a world where we didn't have to worry if if left our doors unlocked ? It that such a bad thing to pomote ?

On a more practical level, having a login system means that people have to sign up, and the sign ups have to be processed. If this is done automatically, then where is the extra protection ? Any troll can just do several sign ups a day, and keep doing them as his logins get blocked. He can easily setup multiple email addresses from random IPs to register with.

If you think this is unlikely, then think about our current troll. He is in the South of France, on a dynamic IP. This means he only has to power cycle his modem, and he gets a new IP. Yes, I can block his whole area, but then he just uses one of a million proxies which gives him a random IP each time he comes here.

This guy will NOT be stopped by a login system. All it will do is slow down his posts (perhaps).

The alternative to an automatic sign up process, is that I, or the moderators have to hand check each sign up. Last time I checked there were around 3000 'unique' visitors here each week. This was tested by setting an ID cookie, obviously some people visit from multiple browsers/devices, and some clear their cookies, so this was just an estimate. Even if only 10% of people sign up, that is 300 signups to be processed, and they had better be processed pretty quickly, or guess who is going to get the complaints !

So, call me lazy, but for me, having a login system is a) not going to solve the troll issue, and b) is going to be a LOT of extra work for me each week.

Alternatively, like some forums, I could just process the sign up every week or so, and watch the forum slowly die... no thanks.

The other reason that people have been asking for logins is to 'protect their names', but again, most forums only give a very limited protection. If you sign up as "LeonMoomin", then any troll can use "Leon Moomin" or probably "leonmoomin" or "LeonMoomin " (space at end), or any other slight modification. Most people are not going to notice the difference.

I took over running this forum when we had problems with the old Bravenet one. I do not run this forum to make money. I get a little money from the adversisers, and I have had a massive 2 donation during the whole of 2010, thanks to the 2 guys concerned, but it seems no thanks from anyone else. I spent a couple of solid weeks writing the original code in ASP, anyone with more than a couple of brain-cells will realise that you cannot just 'copy the Bravenet forum'. Over the past year or 2 I have spent at least a month of my time slowly re-coding the forum in C, to make it faster, and less of a drain on my server, as well as constant tweaks and tricks to keep out the spammers.

Think about this... thsi is a completely open forum, and how much 'spam' do we get here ? Probaly less than 1%. The the recent problems with spammers have been from people that are 'wetlook aware'. There is no general spam here ! Do you all think that is by magic ? No, it has taken a lot of careful programming and protection measures. Less than 2% of the spam removed by myself and moderators is 'general spam' e.g. pen*s enlargement, free degrees, and all the general crap you get on other open forums/blogs and I'm sure in your everyday email.

So, if you see the occasional bit of crap here, don't go on about it. If you want it removed quickly then EMAIL ME !, or just ignore it,k and it will be dealt with in due course.

I have been 'nominally' on holiday for the past 2 weeks, but have been checking the forum at least twice a day for problems, I have far better ways of spending my Xmas and New Year, so if anyone wants to run a boring, run of the mill, crap, login forum, then please go ahead and set one up, and see who goes there...

Also, during the last 2 weeks, only 2 people have had the sense to bother to email me about issues on the forum. Everyone else obviously just assumes that even over the holiday period, I'm glued here to my monitor, reading every damn message ?

To those of you who appreciate all that I do for this community, I wish you a very Happy New Year,

for those who don't like this forum, or the way I try to run it, just F&^K OFF elsewhere and take your ill-informed, opinions with you.
