That fear is warranted. I don't think a hidden link could be a phishing site (unless you enter your credit card number on an unknown page) but viewing a malicious picture or flash video is all it takes to become infected with spyware, opening up everything on your computer to some bad guy. Or it could make you part of a botnet, using your computer to spread spam or become part of organized attacks on all kinds of institutions.
I consider youtube, flickr and such large companies safe; they probably check every picture or movie that enters their database, if they don't completely reformat and recompress it.
Anyway: There's every reason NOT to click unknown links - unless you're running Linux, of course. (I'm afraid of NO link at all!) |
