Upon further reflection, I don't think it is necessarily the sites like LinkBee which are doing anything wrong. It is what their users are doing.
LinkBee is just trying to make a buck by tacking ads onto whatever content their users identify. As long as their users post pages and not direct links to images, there should be no issue. The problem is that it depends on their users "playing by the rules", which is unlikely to occur.
As for the "hidden virus/phishing" concern, it comes down to the person who posted the LinkBee URL, not LinkBee themselves - can you trust that person to post "safe" links?
Users who post LinkBee URLs which direct-link to images are breaking forum rules pertaining to bandwidth stealing, just as if they in-lined images in their posts for sites they are not affiliated with.
