I am sure luck has a lot to do with it. But there is also the environmental factors to consider. At least personally, I had a tendency towards wetlook and mud from as far back as maybe four years old, but with winter clothing it came on around age six, after I nearly drowned in a heavy jacket (I am very thankful my brother was there to save me.) But I recall hearing a psychologist talk about how fetishes can form around traumatic incidents and the subconscious desire to control the post-trauma through replication of similar scenarios. This is still a new idea to me (I first heard it about six months ago) so I am still doing a lot of thinking about it, but it does make some sense.

Another environmental thing to consider is availability, especially at a young age. I imagine it'd be hard to have a mud fetish, say, if you lived in the city all your life, or more easily suppress the tendency. perhaps many more people have the tendency but are in a position to either smother it out of existence or never have the ability to allow it to thrive. Culture probably has a lot to do with this as well, and how much freedom for exploration and deviation is allowed.

It's an interesting discussion and I love it when it pops up every few months.

This question came to me after I was engaged in an IM conversation with someone, and eventually I happened to bring up one of the wetlook sites that frequently advertises themselves on this forum (Which one? Visit them all, dammit!

), and he more or less laughed it off, finding it totally weird and lousier than softcore pornography, prior to making theories on the webmaster's income, saying that he makes probably $30,000 a year off that website (the guy I was talking to runs a fansite for a sports team, BTW) and then he joked that he should start his own porn site.

So this led me to another question, is our enthusiam of wetlook something we trained ourselves to be, or is it an innate characteristic, activated by a satisfying stimulant?

... I guess this is yet another installment of "Nature vs. Nurture"
