It may be an old idea, but the swim-dress is still very much alive and well and readily available today, e.g. http://www.newport-news.com/shop/thumbnail.aspx?womens-swimdresses&index=0&gp_coll_id=2012&gp_cat_id=7505&nav_cat_id=7509&category_id=4893&viewall=1 Those (and their cousins the skirtinis: http://www.chadwicks.com/Search/SearchResults.aspx?SearchHeader=skirtini ) certainly do not count as swimming clothed, but I do find them to be more attractive (or less unattractive) than bikinis.
As for whether that Athleta dress is swim-wear, there is room for debate. Skirted swimsuits like the examples above are invariably made with a very short skirt, a built-in bra, and attached panties. The sunset dress, although it does have a built-in bra, is much longer and is apparently intended to be worn with panties. If a woman wears regular underpants with a garment and would be admitted to a restaurant in it, then it's hard to classify it as swim-wear. I'd have to agree with Desert Hawk that it's street legal.
Issues like shine, color change, cling, and so on are still open questions in this case, but those aren't part of the definition of what is and is not wetlook. Those characteristics simply determine which wetlook is interesting and which is boring.
If anyone wants to conduct a conclusive experiment by getting together enough models to wear all the various colors and prints of the sunset dress that are available, throwing them all in the pool, and seeing what they look like as they climb out dripping wet -- I'll be happy to help evaluate those results. :-) It's too bad the online catalog didn't have at least one picture demonstrating the "pool toss" feature of the dress.

By wetcat1000 - john@johncunningham3.wanadoo.co.uk Thu 02/04/09 23:02:06 GMT This looks to be that old and somewhat strange idea, a swim-dress. I remember seeing them in catalogues many years ago, and they were in the swimsuit section. So it is swim-wear!! |

By A Nonny Mouse - Wed 01/04/09 18:19:57 GMT Just found on a mail-order clothing website - a dress whose description says it "doesn’t mind getting thrown into the pool fully clothed". If the folks at Athleta designed it that way on purpose (and it sounds like they did), then I'd love to get invited to their company party.
Be sure to click on "Zoom Image - More Views" to see a real person wearing it.
Now the philosophical question is: If the manufacturer says it's OK for a woman to swim in it, is it still wetlook if she does? Personally, I wouldn't want to make any hasty judgements without seeing ample photographic evidence first. :-)
