Yeah.....I have had about 20 years of experience with dirty canal water.....it's called the Songkran Water festival in Chiang Mai....whereiin most of the water they throw at you...comes from the canal system that encircles the city.

All I can say is....it may not be clean water in Thailand....but it is no worse than swimming in the Thames in London....or the canals in Venice.

In 20 years of going to Songkran and all the people I have met there...I have never heard of anybody who has contracted skin infections or anything major....myself included. The biggest danger of getting sick in Thailand...is not the water...but the drastic change in temperatures between the outside air temperatures...and the freezing cold indoor temperatures inside the shopping malls in Thailand.....i.e. I have gotten sick a couple of times....due to walking around in a wet t shirt in 100 degree weather...and then going inside a 65 degree shopping mall to change my batteries....I invariably get a cold or chills from doing that....but the dirty water itself...is not really a problem.....

....but I would not advise bathing in the river Ganges in India though.....nor bathing in the seafront at the beach in Pattaya, Thailand either...cos the city's sewer system broke down 10 years...and has not been properly fixed....so the city pumps raw sewage onto the beach there....

In Thailand you might smell a bit iffy at the end of a day of being hammered all day with dirty water.....but so does everybody else too....and thats the scent of "Canal Number 5".....ha ha

But it won't kill you....cos I have endured it for 20 years.

I recently heard about someone, not into wetlook so far as I know, who went into a canal to retrieve his bicycle when it fell in! My initial reaction was that it must have been freezing, as this happened last week. However, if it had been in the summer I would have loved to have done the same. The concern of the person I was with when I heard this, though, was that he could have caught any one of a number of illnesses, including Weil's disease, which is carried in rat urine. I looked up about this, and discovered that one of the reasons people the incidence of this disease is so low is because generally, people don't immerse themselves in urban pools of slow moving water.

Now, if there was ever a group pre-disposed to getting illnesses from dirty water, its you lot! So, I thought I'd ask, have any of you had any experience of this kind of thing? What do we think the real risk is, based on our collective experience of spontaneous or planned dunkings in non-chlorinated pools of water?
