Sullivan covers the subject of the color blue in about 3 pages, but here is one paragraph for you:

"One of the few hues that can be perceived as both light and dark, blue defines our many moods. It is the eggshell shade of a baby's blanket and the stern authority of the uniforms of the police, umpires, and many military trooops. The appeal of blue is nearly universal, spanning geography, culture, age, gender, and disposition. Though is it is a comparative rarity in living nature--blueberries, the blue jay, forget-me-nots--blue is the color of both the sky and the sea. It covers the whole earth."

I just want to tell you about a new book I've discovered and checked out of the library:

Jeans: A Cultural History of an American Icon

by James Sullivan

I've only read the first chapter so far but it has already answered a question I've had for a long time: Why is blue the preferred color of jeans? He provides lots of good reasons for that--read it.
