You must be trying to use Windows Media Viewer. I was always getting that too when trying to use WMV. I downloaded and started using VLC Media Player (that's for the suggestion MK!!) and found about 98% of all videos play ok with it. I only found WMV work only half the time, even after updating it. Hope this works for you.
