My understanding is that there are several issues:
Areas that are usually safe for swimming are usually tested mainly for bacteria. If they are present, they typically enter your body through either your mouth/nose (if you submerge your head) or your rear end. They cause digestive ailments and colds. I understand that these bacteria multiply more quickly in warmer water and much less quickly in cooler water.
Areas that are not tested at all for swimming could harbor other stuff which could cause worse damage. But that does not seem to be the case where you are. |

By Mark - jtsmark@yahoo.com Mon 05/12/05 06:18:18 GMT I love to go swimming during the winter. I live close to San Francisco and typically go to the closeby reservoirs rather than the ocean (which is much colder). I noticed that when the official swim area get opened towards summer time, the state always performs water quality checks and frequently delays openings due to water quality concerns. I heard that water run-offs into the reservoirs during the rainy season decrease the water quality. Now when I go swimming all bundled up in winter clothes I typically do that outside of the official swim areas, which means that often cattle is peeing and pooing close by. And in rerservoirs there is little to no flowing water. Should I be concerned about health issues? Any feedback is higly appreciated!
Thanks,
Mark
