Interesting that you mention that scene, Malvineous - I nearly quoted that example in a discussion on the same topic a year or two ago, but never got around to it. I think it certainly does.
Some time after the TV series was aired there was an article in the National Trust magazine about Lyme Park, which is owned by the Trust and was the house used as Pemberley in the film, and includes the lake where the scene was shot. In it the staff said that they had been overwhelmed by forty and fifty-something women who were all swooning over "Mr Darcy" (Colin Firth) - but the significant point they noted was that they seemed more interested in the lake, which appeared only in that brief scene, than in the house which appeared throughout a lot of the series!
I'm sure it also inspired this group of kids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V18gLwFHrYo (there are 4 more videos of this if you really want!)
All of the "ladies of a certain age" in my office were also swooning over Mr Darcy, and (admittedly when prompted by me) said that the lake scene was the sexiest bit. And I noticed an increase, again of women in the same age group, who openly said "ooh woo" or similar if they saw me get my shirt wet at the beach, where previously they would have felt obliged to look disapproving. So yes, I think that women did find that bit of wetlook sexy, and I also think that it loosened up attitudes to wetlook amongst women in that age group for good - as I have mentioned a couple of times recently, I now find it easy to coax women of my own age (ie the same age group) into the water with me. |
In reply to Message (65771) Pride and Prejudice shirt scene
By Malvineous - mrnemesis@ntlworld.com Fri 20/11/15 22:17:39 GMT The shirt scene from the BBC's 1995 Pride and Prejudice adaptation got mentioned in the TV guide this week. It's no secret that this scene is very popular, but the reason for its popularity isn't ever directly mentioned.
The suggestion always *seems* to be that women liked it, so does that mean that women *do* like men in wet clothes?
