We may eventually see a glasses-less 3D TV... it would borrow principles of holography - a sort of simplified hologram which would vary the viewed image in the horizontal only. So you could move around the room and still get a 3D effect, but turn your head to the side and the 3D effect disappears. Probably a decade or more into the future before it could be consumer-ready, but given advances in digital signal processing and display technology, it's just about do-able today.

A few years ago, we had experimented with 3D to see if it was worth messing with. Here is the thing about 3D images. The idea isn't a new one. 3D has been around almost as long as photography itself. But in all of that time 3D never took off, and there is a reason for this. To achieve the 3D effect, you have to produce two 2D images simultaneously at slightly different points of view, then present them to both eyes where our brains translate the images into a 3 dimensional image. The problem is there is no practical way to accomplish this without some serious disadvantages. There are several methods to create a three dimensional image, yet they all require the need of special glasses to view the image. Some methods, such as stereoscopic 3D use mirrors to split a single image into two separate left and right images, but when you view the image, you lose half of the frame width, and you have to adjust your distance to the monitor to see the effect. The use of glasses which contains two separate monitors, virtual reality, is expensive and force you to wear the glasses. The worse case is 3D can cause headaches.

From time to time 3D is introduced to great fanfare, but like all fads, falls out of favor for good old fashioned 2D images.
