I think it is fair to say that the original pin up artist that inspired Hugh Hefner the most would have been Alberto Vargas (1892 to 1982)

As per wiki, Hugh Hefner was working for Esquire magazine in the 1940's and fought against the U.S. Postal Service when it tried to ban the distribution of the magazine due to the Vargas work, and it was Hefner who later worked with Vargas to create the "Vargas Girls" genre in his Playboy magazine.

I didn't know that Hugh Hefner actually got inspired by pin up to begin with.
