I don’t believe for a moment that any AI has any conscious awareness of what it is generating. Yet, that story is perfectly coherent and demonstrates a level of self-awareness that I don’t believe any machine is remotely capable of conceiving of its own ability. Even if you fed a machine a lot of examples to process, the idea that it could understand written language to the extent that it could produce a story seems totally infeasible.
There has got to be something more to this than a magic box that, having no conscious awareness of the world or human language, can create works of its own.
(If it were true, it would only serve as a painful reminder of how utterly fucking stupid all other computer software is. I work in IT, and computers are needlessly the dumbest heap of shit the world has ever seen. It doesn’t need to be this way: the technology capability has long outstripped humanity’s ability to co-operate and put quality over greed. Getting my first Mac around 1998 was a huge eye-opener, but Apple themselves have never kept up their own standards; nothing now is as good compared to the baseline standard, as Mac OS was in the 90s, even when you factor in all the massive flaws of classic Mac OS.)
Still, when you think about Ada Lovelace’s view of computing compared to Babbage’s, it’s certainly interesting — if this AI is doing what it claims to be doing, it has not only reached Ada Lovelace’s desired level of sophistication, but also overtaken Mr Data’s. (The British government asking Babbage about “garbage in garbage out” was also curious, something which Babbage also failed to understand.)
OK end of rant. Crawling back into my hole. |

By Poliut - Mon 09/01/23 21:21:39 GMT https://www.infiniteconversation.com/ Is a product of AI.
And yeah, sometimes you have to remind yourself that the tech tree isn't what it was 10-20+ years ago.
It still has some ways to go, but it's made significant progress over what it could do in the times you're familiar with.
Visually, I think AI wetlook as well as CGI wetlook has some bridges to cross even though it's made some significant progress over the past decade or so. I recall wondering about that (CGI wetlook) on here way back in the day. May just search the scores of archives to see if I can find it.
Also, came across this from the other day which you may or may not find interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IV29YNTH3M |

By Malvineous - mrnemesis@ntlworld.com Mon 09/01/23 20:30:06 GMT I still remember doing AI at university during my computer science degree around the end of the last millennium. There were and still are two meanings to the term: ARTIFICIAL intelligence (software systems that simulate the appearance of intelligent life, as you find in games), and artificial INTELLIGENCE (software systems that function as the very beginnings of a brain).
Although over two decades have passed, I still don’t believe that computers have achieved creativity, and certainly not the kind of grasp over written language as suggested by the story below.
AI art for example demonstrates a total lack of three dimensional space or the nature of what is depicted. In time this will of course improve, but we are a long way off.
That story is so coherent from end to end, that I cannot fathom how a machine could have produced it.
Can we see the process behind its creation? |

By Adrian - adrian065105@outlook.com Mon 09/01/23 01:54:51 GMT AI wrote the whole story. I only asked it to write a wetlook story and specified the clothing. |

By Adrian - adrian065105@outlook.com Sun 08/01/23 22:36:35 GMT As Emily stared at herself in the full-length mirror, she couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. She had spent hours getting ready for the party, carefully applying her makeup and slipping into her favorite gown. But as she brushed her long, brunette hair, she realized that it still felt greasy and unwashed.
With a sigh, Emily headed into the bathroom, determined to give her hair a quick rinse before the party. She had just stepped into the shower when she suddenly remembered that she was still wearing her party attire.
At first, Emily was mortified. She couldn't believe that she had forgotten to take off her dress before showering. But as the warm water cascaded over her body, she began to feel a sense of liberation. She had always been so careful and meticulous about her appearance, but now she was letting go of all of her inhibitions.
As she lathered up her hair and scrubbed her body clean, Emily couldn't help but feel a little bit naughty. She knew that she would be the talk of the party if she showed up with her hair and dress drenched, but she didn't care. She was having too much fun to worry about what anyone else thought.
When Emily finally stepped out of the shower, she was grinning from ear to ear. She couldn't wait to make her grand entrance at the party, dripping wet and beautiful in her drenched attire. She knew that she would be the life of the party, and she reveled in the freedom that came with letting go of her perfectionism.
