Well....that is a debatable point I think the Germans will argue about. It is true that Eyeworks productions in The Netherlands were the first to call their show Celebnity Splash in  2012 (they called it "Sterren Springen Op Zaterdag") but the real origin of this diving show concept dates back 8 years earlier to a long running German variety show hosted Stefan Raab. In 2004 Stefan started hosting annual diving show special events on his show caled "TV total Turmspringen". The Germans did their  annual diving show for 8 years until Eyeworks copied the German show and came out with their Splash show in 2002.

Stefan Raab sued the Dutch, claiming he invented this show in 2004 and that the Dutch had copied it without obtaining his copyright permission.

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV_total_Turmspringen

I forget the full details, but this case was eventually settled in the German courts.

Anyway....I have clips from Stefan Raab's diving show on the Prosebien channel that date back several years before the Dutch copy cat show was created. Any German wetlook fan who used to watch Stafen Rabb's show will know that they were doing this concept on German tv long before it was rebranded "Splash".

The Germans also did a similar show called "Die Pool Champions" with wetlook pool events well before Splash show as well.....but that show was based on a 1972 UK tv kids show called "We are the Champions".

These days lawsuits over copyright and branding issues are usually won by the person who has the deepet pockets.....e.g. the Apple logo was first created by The Beatles n 1968 as their logo for their music buisiness, and then Steve Jobs stole that logo for his computer company the late 70's.  The Beatles sued Steve Jobs, and it was settled out of court because Steve Jobs could afford to pay for an out of court settlement.

Gee....that old concept again.......there must be a fortune being made by the people who invented concepts for shows. All you need to do is develop one show and then you can sell the rights to that show to 40 other countries around the world over the next 10 years.

One example being the "Hole in the Wall: gameshow developed by the Japanese 20 years ago, that was sold over 40 countries over the next 10 years.

This Dutch show is really late to the game here, because that concept was first seen over 10 years ago on a Brazilian game show and then in several South American gameshows...and now 10 years later the Dutch have it.

But kudos for the Dutch for being the FIRST to develop what became known in UK as "Bob's Your Uncle" in 1992 in the UK, and later copied in Spain and Italy as "Luna di Mial" and the sinking boat wedding couples game was also copied in Argentina as well.  The Netherlands was the first to originate the wet wedding game in 1987 when they called it "Ron's Honeymoon Quiz".

The Dutch version ran for over 100 episodes from 1987 to 1994, and only a handful of clips are on Youtube. I would love to see more of those old shows. I have the 20+ UK episodes of Bob's Your Uncle and the 20+ episodes made in Italy and Spain....so those are complete, but over 90 of the Dutch episodes remain to be found.

Of course the most famous example of a wetlook concept of a gameshow being exported to many other countries was the German Mann O Mann show, which was sold to over 50 countries over the next 25 years....and was still playing in a new Vietnamese version on Viet TV last year. The interesting stat on that show is that despite the same pool dunking game being recreated in 50 countries, only 2 of those countries (Germany and Greece) had versions where the ladies went in the pool.

Anyway....if you want to see more of similar scenes from this latest Dutch show....you can find lots of old clips from 10 years ago of the Brazilian version of the same stunt.

The old saying "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" relates to all these copycat shows....but I think the real saying is more like "imitation is the laziest way to make money".
