To achieve reflection, you can simply copy the subject to a layer (if you are using Photoshop, Elements or any layer-based software). The layer can then be rotated horizontally or flipped so that it becomes a mirrored image of the main subject. The next step to make it more realistic, is to use the opacity setting to either raise or lower the level to which we "see" the copied layer. If you want a hard reflection, the opacity would be kept higher. If the water is more cloudy or if you want it subtle, lower the opacity so it fades into the layer below, thus making it less visible. Finally, to add further realism, you could distort the copied image using many of the various settings to do just that. "liquify", add "noise", "ripple", etc., based on whatever the program software offers. Some likely would have even an auto-reflection feature. Hope this helps. Just on the moral front, I would suggest making sure your "subjects" are either willing participants to having their image used and altered, or refrain from sharing it.

Hello all,

I was thinking about this: I have some candid shots of various girls in outfits I would like to see them getting wet in, but all these girls were completely dry, in locations with no water at all (e.g. on the street, at work, on the bus etc.).

What I was experimenting with was isolating the girl from the picture and place it into another photograph of the sea, a pool, fountain etc., so it would appear that the girl was swimming, sitting down in the water, wading into the water, whatever.

Of course, most colours of clothing get darker when they get wet, and this effect is added quite easily, even using MS Word and MS Paint.

What I would like to know, however, is if there is any photo editing software which can add the reflection of the subject in the water, to make the edited photo look realistic, rather than the girl appearing to have been chopped up and placed on top of the photograph.

If anyone can recommend a photo editor which can create this "reflection on water" effect, it would be very much appreciated.
