We've ALMOST completely converted to metric in Canada. The construction industry still operates largely in imperial - a 2x4 is still a 2x4... well... something less than 2" by something less than 4" but you get the point - a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood is still 4 feet  by 8 feet. I fear the day it becomes some exact number of centimeters by some number of centimeters. It could leave a lot of us with crooked, ill-fit-together houses where the standards collide.

Anyway, born and initially raised in England, I learned imperial measures and the old British currency of pounds, shillings, pence, farthings, etc.. I arrived in Canada still a child to learn a much simpler decimal-based currency system, and later the metric (or SI) system which is also much simpler and more logical. Still, to this day, I have a better intuitive understanding of quantities expressed in imperial measure than I do of metric, but whenever I have to do any calculations, it sure is easier working them in metric.

I think it's better to "bite the bullet", suffer the temporary pain of the conversion, and align with the rest of the world on a simpler, logical system than hold on to an archaic system riddled with oddities and inconsistencies, no matter how familiar and comfortable the old system may be.

To answer your question... the only thing holding up conversion in the US is discomfort over going through the change, facing the unfamiliar and leaving the familiar behind. Well... that and some economic cost of relabelling and recalibrating.

...by the way-I am wondering, why America still uses empiric measurements instead of metric measurements.

I live here and I wonder the same thing, but I'm in the minority.

News/Mag/Book ...so why do you not  get yourself a small european car who is manifactured more than a 3 million times (VW Lupo,Peugeot,Fiat and many more to name) so you always are shure to get spare parts such as gearboxes (personally I'd say manual shift is easier and better than automatic shift) klutches, braking equpment and so on -> CHEAP and easily=> Confused

Depressed ...by the way-I am wondering, why America still uses empiric measurements instead of metric measurements.

Smokin ===> repairing an American car in Europe gives a whole lot of problems with all the tools! (same vice versa=?)

In reply to Message (52417) Angry OT: My car's transmission died. THIS REALLY SUCKS!

Last night the transmission on my 1995 oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera died.  I was going down the road and all of a sudden with no warning it lost power and started slowing down while the engine revved like if you press the accelerator while in park or neutral.  I pulled over, shifted to park and then back into drive, and it started moving at a maximum speed of 20 MPH  and was making a horrible grinding noise.  I made it home (about one mile away).  It seems about 99% likely that the transmission is blown.  A rebuilt transmission will cost around $2000 parts and labor.  That is a lot of freaking money for me!  I don't know if this piece of crap car is worth it.  It might be time to send this car to the crusher.  It only has 98,000 miles.  A transmission should last longer than that.  Buying another car would cost a lot more, though.  I have already spent about $700 on repairs of other problems with this clunker this year.  I can't afford a brand new car at my meager pay rate.  My savings are almost depleted after paying $362.09 per month for COBRA health insurance to my old job for the past year.  I have managed to stay out of debt all of my life until now, but that will probably end very soon.  I have another car, a 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity with 173,000 miles.  it has been quite reliable for the last 12 years, but a car with 23 years and 173,000 miles could drop dead any time.  I need to have 2 cars, since pieces of junk are all I can afford.  I NEED MORE MONEY!!!
