I agree. Hollywood, and especially TV, has never been very good at wetlook but I agree that recent years are even more so. As it has been pointed out by those with inside knowledge in this forum, it takes an effort to show true wetlook. In shooting time, it can be a long time between someone climbing out of the pool and the follow up scene being shot even though it is supposed to look on film to be immediate. We have all seen snapshots of old movie scenes where an actress was being watered down by a stage hand in order to maintain the wet look. I would be shocked to see that today.

I just saw the new version of the movie True Grit and there is a scene where the female lead crosses a river on a horse and is submerged up to her neck. She is wearing heavy clothes and an overcoat but shortly after emerging from the river she not only isn’t dripping but looks downright dry. Huh?

A recent post here and a reflection on some apparent trends leads me to ponder the following:

We don't seem to see a lot of enjoyable "spontaneous" wetlook in movies/TV these days. Case in point: Sunday's episode of "Desperate Housewives" contained a scene in which the primary 4 housewives end up in a pool fully clothed. Refer to: http://iwdb.wampedia.org/Scene.aspx?ID=9964 (sorry, just words/links, no pictures). We see the slapstick 3-girl cat-fight culminating with them falling in, we even see "Bree" dive in fully clothed in a silly attempt to prop up a lie, and we see 4 heads above water, cut to commercial. After the break, we see an apparent "aftermath" of 4 women with supposedly damp hair and clothes, not that it really loooks that way even in HD.

This sort of thing leads me to wonder about possible "political over-correctness". We often see women in mainstream media displaying themselves in an overtly sexualized manner. We used to see women as often as men in somewhat humiliating slapstick situations (covered in mess). Seems to be rare these days in the "PC" world - wouldn't want to show someone degraded, even if it is a scene played for comedy by willing actors/actresses.

Could it be that we didn't see any of the DH women exit the pool because it would have created sexualized imagery which we dare not present when it is against context for the scene and the characters' supposed state of mind, even if it is consistent with continuity, and the actresses would either not have cared about it or might have even enjoyed the attention it would have garnered?

Maybe it was left out because the show has only so much running time in which to fit the prescribed jokes and the necessary drama for the episode storyline without encroaching on commercials. But could there be something in the guidelines for prime-time TV which only permits sexualization of women in media when it is by explicit intent, free of any suggestion of happenstance, even if only in a fictionalized context? If so, isn't that taking political correctness just a tad too far?
