Not to be mean or pedantic, but methinkst you get what you ask for - and pay for. The DivX site offers three different downloads: 1) Just the codecs and player - no adware, 2) The "free" version of the "Pro" edition (with advanced features) which has the adware components, and which is why it is offered "free"; and 3) the Official Pro edition for ~$30 and no adware.
What you have described here is downloading the adware version and then disabling the adware. All I would ask is that you support these people by either purchasing their product, or putting up with the unique marketing approach they used to bring the product to market. They stay alive at least in part due to the revenues they get for the Pro edition of their product (as they offer the codecs for free). If you use their product, it's only fair they reap the reward. Otherwise how long will they be able to continue.
Just my thoughts on this... |

By rockpommel - Tue 04/02/03 05:54:55 GMT I 've downloaded the newest Divx Codec and was really surprised, because I caught 'gator'. Gator is a kind of spyware. It is not a virus, but It 'calls' home to an advertisement company.
My firewall refused the Homecall.
I wanted to get rid of the program with the utility adaware. This is a utility to be 'aware' of 'ad'vertisement. The utility was able to clean up the registry, but not to delete the program.
You will find the program in the directory You installed divx. It is not easy to delete, because the program is in use. I restarted my win98 to stop after 'DOS' was loaded, then i killed the exe on the command line.
Is it possible to install DIVX without that spyware?
