Now there's a woman to inspire a few wet dreams - especially back in the 80's. |

By MK - wamtec@compuserve.com Fri 21/07/06 20:32:56 GMT I have at least half a dozen other music videos that are based on the Ophelia theme too.....just can't remember them all at this time. Don't forget, there have also been several movie or tv versions of HAMLET that have also depicted the Ophelia floatng in the river theme too....though be careful....cos several film versions merely read the words of Shakespeare while not actiually showing Ophelia in the river...they just talk about her in past tense whilst skipping over that scene.
And....one of the biggest disappointments on the Ophelia theme....was when UK singer Kate Bush released an album that had this nice picture of her floating in water, like Ophelia.....but these scenes never appeared in any known Kate Bush music video....I hunted for the music video that had this scene...but alas...it seems she shot this still purely as a publicity still for her album....but these scenes were never in her music videos from that album (Hounds of Love) ...here's the Kate Bush Ophelia style pic she did in the late 1970's...

By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Fri 21/07/06 15:58:27 GMT Both in the database, indexed along with the Kylie video under the keyword "Ophelia" (themes). I think it's a rather frequent image - seems to me I've seen it - or something similar - quite a number of times in music videos.

By MK - wamtec@compuserve.com Fri 21/07/06 10:35:56 GMT That is interesting....you could be right.....cos the era (a 1975 production) sounds about right....and the girl who posed in the bath for that Ophelia picture was "Elizabeth Siddal"....aka "Lizzie Siddell"...and she is listed as a character in this tv movie THE BROTHERHOOD.....so perhaps that is what I saw.
However...another well known expert on UK tv dramas just emailed me....to say he swears he saw this scene on one of Ken Russell's earlist tv plays...called DANTE'S INFERNO....which was about the life store of Rosetti and Milais...and also features the Lizzie Siddell character too....the only problem I have with my memory is....this Ken Russell tv play was a 1967 production...made for the BBC's Omnibus series.....see details here
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061552/
but in 1967 we did not have color tv in the UK...that did not start until 1969.....and teleplays made in the UK in 1967 were only made in black and white...and I found that this Ken Russell version was released on video in the USA in 1993...on Amazon...see here...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6301540328/102-2084288-8696935?v=glance&n=404272
and as you can see....when they released it on video...it was shot in black and white.....and I definitely remember seeing this bbc series in color in the mid to late 70's......so my gut feel says that what I saw must have been from this 1975 Ben Kingsley version instead.
However....I am told that the 1967 version also depicts the Lizzie Siddell in the bath scenes for Ophelia nicely too....cos I am told in this version you see how Millais kept lighting candles under the tin bath, in order to try and keep Lizzie warm...whilst she posed in the bath for hours.
So....both versions are probably worth mentioning in your database and worth tracking down and seeing.

In reply to Message (23740.1.1) ...also
By MK - wamtec@compuserve.com Fri 21/07/06 07:46:31 GMT ...one of my long lost/most wanted tv clips.....was a BBC (pbs) period drama series that aired some time in the late 1970's....and I forget the name of the series, but it was a period drama about Millais and his fellow artist friends....and in one of the scenes on this period drama they re-enacted how Millais actually painted that famous Ophelia picture...using a live model in his studio....and it was NOT painted by having a model posing in a stream. The way Millais painted that picture was that he had a large coffin shaped tin bath in his studio, and his model would get into the tin bath in her dress, and Millais spread some flowers over her...and then she lay in the water in her dress while he painted the picture. Of course he added in the stream and excluded the tin bath from his painting....he just wanted to get the effects of his model lying in the water in her dress. All of this was depicted VERY nicely on this BBC tv drama series....and sadly that is one of many clips I lost when I lost some of my tapes when I moved from the UK in 1980....and I have been searching for a copy of that tv series ever since. I am sure that this BBC show was probably aired in the USA under the "PBS Masterpiece Theatre" series......if anybody knows what the title of this show was (it was about the life of Millais and his fellow artist friends)...let me know...I am sure BBC have probably released this on DVD by now.

By MK - wamtec@compuserve.com Fri 21/07/06 07:34:16 GMT Nice pics.
Yeah.....there are also at least a dozen different music videos I have collected that have emulated the Ophelia theme too.....the one by Kylie Minogue is one of the most memorable ones....i.e. "Where the Roses Grow" from 1995.
