A number of sites use the "Referer" to decide whether to serve you the requested page or not. This is used primarily to prevent people from posting clickable links (as is often done here) directly to pictures or other internal webpages. Those webmasters want their viewers to only see those internal pages if they've gotten there via the site itself, not some external reference. It also allows them to determine WHERE a clickable link is posted, which we also sometimes when people show up here after a link to their site has been posted - either from curiosity or to complain about the posted link.
Whether Nigel is using them like that or not, I'm not sure, but I think that's a valid reason, and the only one I can think of. |
In reply to Message (8874.2) WHY do you need to know where I came from
By crazygirlsbrian - webmaster@crazygirlsinternational.com Fri 27/02/04 04:16:11 GMT Obviously some people would prefer that no website knows where they clicked through from (I can't think of a great reason myself), but anyone, NIS enables the blocking of this information by default. Many websites, including the Wetlook Forum, rely on this information for correct operation, so below are instructions on how to enable just the 'Referers'.
I'm one of them. Why SHOULD you know the last page I was looking at? |
