As you will see, it's a so called "open source" project. That means, you can get the complete source code for free. Whatever you do with ist, the result has to be free also.

On the official site, you can get the compiled code (*.exe) an install the same program, which is documented in the sources.

You have the possibility to download the sources and talk about the internal structure with a friend, who understands the usage of C++ an the (horryfiing) MFC (M$ Foundation Classes).

To compile the code you need some more additional tools (zlib and more) and Microsoft Visual Studio Net.

The problem, you told about, causes in illegal usage of this source codes: Some "individuals" added some spyware and other unliked things, compiled it and sold it as a "Mod"  (modified eMule). These Mods regulary come without the source codes and they are claimed to download more efficiently.

At time, I use a LSD - Mod, which also comes with the source code. And I compiled it by myself ...

It is a usefull and easy way, to read the forum, which is linked on the official page. There you can see, which mods are usefull, whic version of eMle to use. troubleshooting, how to install and use eMule, what's new, what will be new and such on.

Besides:

My link does work; at time I have ~130MB upload from this 29MB-File. Some Users, who got it, are downloading other wetlook material. After installing eMule, type "wetlook" in the search window; you will find them.
