And like I said, +R has proven nearly full compatibility with existing players.

I'm not saying that one format works better than the other -- there is really not much difference in terms of compatibility. But there are many people out there who have this bizarre and unfounded notion that -R is somehow much better than +R, and for some whimsical reason, choose not to accept +R as a viable format, when in fact it WILL dominate the market in a few years.

If people feel that +R has compatibility problems, I would like to see the data (compiled by a REPUTABLE source) that supports their conclusion.

So don't believe what you read on some uninformed joker's webpage, who trashes +R because he is simply biased against it for political or economical reasons, or because he doesn't like Microsoft, or for no real reason at all other than to be a nonsensically babbling rabble-rouser. Real DVD +R's playing in real DVD players in real-world situations are what tells the story. Again, I've sold over 50 DVD +R's worldwide, without a single problem.

DVD-R is the way to go...I've created a number of DVD's using this for matering...about 50% of DVD players will play this format... DVD-R is the most supported recordable medium to date!!

I really cannot understand why +R backers claim better compatibility because regular DVD players play -R disks better.

And 4.77 GB is 4.77 GB, you can sfuff as much so-so quality video to both.

DVD+R backers have also lied before about first generation DVDV+RW burner compability with DVD+R disks, so it is a bit hard to believe anything they claim.

Hello, I am mostly a lurker but do post occasionally... (if the handle is taken by someone pls let me know). First of all, Thanks Nigel for the new forum... it is a lot faster than Bravenet and you did a great job recreating the Bravenet interface. Your efforts to provide a stable forum for the community are greatly appreciated.

I was very interested in DVD now, and plan to get a DVD burner in the near future to, in addition to backing up data, use it for burning some of my old clip tapes to disc and use the DVD medium for all future archival recordings, wetlook and non-wetlook.

My question: Is there any sort of a winner emerging in the +R/-R battle yet? The more I read on the WWW about it, the more confused I get. Of course +R discs are more expensive, but +R backers claim better compatibility with regular DVD players. They also claim things like being able to play a disc before it is finalized, being able to stuff 6 hrs of so-so quality video on a 4.77 GB disc (something like VHS's SLP mode), and being able to create fancier title screens. HOWEVER, I heard that most of these things are a moot point when burning on a PC (as opposed to a standalone DVD recorder) because they are a function of the video authoring software, not the hardware.

MK, Nigel and others in the professional realm, I was wondering what you  think about all this, and which format should I pursue? (I would appreciate any input that non-profs may have too!)
