In post-revolution France, a group of women called 'merveilleuses' used to dress in dresses with very little underneath. To get the desired effect of body hugging dresses, they were soaked with sponges to make them cling to their bodies. They would re-wet them anyway possible if they started to dry and especially stayed out in heavy rain
