My opinion of AOL is very low, but it is my personal opinion.

From our server logs it seems it spends it's entire time switching IP addresses and sharing them out rather than just downloading stuff as people want. The front end gets in the way and probably slows things down too. Not sure why anyone would need all that front-end clutter in the way as all you need to use the internet is a web browser and email client and they come free with Windows anyway.

AOL manages to block a percentage of all internet providers at some point or other. A while ago, they blocked BT Openworld, effectively cutting off a large proportion of UK people from emailing AOL people. Half of my AOL-using customers don't always get my emails and I've now resorted to Instant Messaging to ensure my communications get to them.

Yesterday, AOL was blocking emails that contained CCBILL website addresses in them as they reckoned that CCBILL was a source of undesireable spam. Work that one out?

Many of the AOL users I know have constant lockups and Windows freezes with AOL dropping on and offline all the time. When they try to remove AOL from their computer, Windows never restarts again in many cases and they have to reformat the hard drive.

So, in my opinion, stick with a "normal" internet provider who just provides you with a conenction point to the Internet and none of the other clutter to get in the way of a fast route to web servers.

By the way, with reference to the Styx servers - both run at around 10% utilisation most of the time, except for the Xmas and New Year specials, where everyone tried to grab them on the first day. For the 2 days that followed, the servers were at 100%. Those that waited, got their downloads VERY fast the next day onwards. Therefore, I suspect your problem is AOL.

If you're going to switch to RoadRunner, why not take the opportunity to ditch AOL and sign up with someone like EarthLink instead?

In reply to Message (7745) Question Anybody have AOL, try to downlaod Styx vids, etc.???

Anybody else using America Online 9.0 to try to go online. I find it VERY slow, thought 6.0 much faster. Anybody with dial-up able to download the vids from Styx's webpage? tried downloading the lowest resolution and got it would take 2 hours!!!!! This is ridiculous! Hoping to switch to RoadRunner in a couple weeks. But did try and dowload Styx's vids even on Roadrunner and it took awhile. Just wondering if anyone else is putting up with AOHell and they can do anything with it?

Thanks!

Have a Happy (and hopefully wet) New Year's everyone!!
