That someone was me.  And I totally agree with everything your saying.  Copyright laws need to be enforced whether someone is making loads of money, little money, or no money.  You can't be selective about when the law should be applied.  In this I mean...

If you ever growing up or even now got a tape/CD of music from a friend or gave one to someone that they didn’t legally have the rights to own, then you are in the same boat.  I don't care if you had it for 1 day or 10 years.... you should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.  What's that... your only 9 years old... doesn't matter, you will pay for your crimes.

You ever copy a movie or get a movie from someone on VHS/DVD, your in the same boat.  Oh come on… like you never had a copy as a teenager of some porno that you and your friends all made copies of.  The subject of the material here isn’t that different.

Ever install a game on your computer someone gave you that you didn't have a legal license to run?  Better yet... I wonder how many people on this forum are running all of Bill Gates's software fully licensed.

My 65 year old music teacher in 7th grade surely should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for making copies of some Beatles sheet music for us to sing.  Judging from the ticket prices on Paul McCartney's last concert tour ($250+) a seat I am sure he would have drove that lady into bankruptcy for her crimes.

I enjoy discussing this issue with someone when they get heated up about copyright infringement.  Because I have yet to meet anyone that hasn’t violated some copyright infringement at some point.  And the thing is… you can’t be selective about this… in that one form of infringement is not as bad as others.  The law doesn’t work that way.

I am not trying to start an argument.  As I believe that copyright infringement is wrong.  Have I ever done it?... sure.  I guess that makes me a hypocrite.

I was just pointing out that the original post by Graham came off (to me, and that’s the important part because that’s the only person I speak for) negative and accusatory.  I would avoid doing business with the guy (you can now begin flame about how I never pay for anything right here:             ).  And I have bought a few tapes/DVD’s, very little…but I have.

More power to him if uses the law to his advantage.

In reply to Message (7299) Hello Some thoughts on the file-sharing issue

Someone tried to compare one of the larger paysite operators with the RIAA regarding copyright issues, but there is one huge difference between the recording and wam industries - the recording industry is widely regarded as having spent the last 60+ years ripping off both its customers and its artists.  I gather from various sources that many bands make very little money from record sales, almost all of it goes to the record companies, and the bands have to get by on what they make from merchandising and touring.  So when people swap MP3s back and forth, they're having vry little effect on the actual artists, and in some cases artists who's songs get traded find they gain a larger fan base and hence make more money on tour because some of these extra people come to the gigs and buy stuff, even if they never buy a CD.  There are bands who've made their entire catalogues available on-line and become more popular as a result.

Wam is completely different.  There are no live shows, no tours, and no auxiliary merchandise, and the producers generally pay their models a decent rate for the job.  So when people file-share paysite wam materials they're ripping off the genre's own artists, most of whom have put a great deal of time and effort into what they produce.

No-one produces wam material for the money, because there is very little money in it.  Smart producers can arrange things so they cover their own costs and can expand their work, but even the major producers are mostly doing it part-time, and doing something else to pay the rent.
