Win95 will not support networking...so you cannot do things that way.

The simplest way (in the 1980's) to transfer files between one pc to another (in the good old days before windows) was to use "Laplink" ..and in the DOS days you just installed laplink on both pc's and connected them together via the supplied Laplink mult-headed cable that connect one pc to the other via the serial ports on the pc (or was it the parallel port...I forget). I still have my old copy of Laplink and the cables and thats how I can move stuff from my old Win 95 pc to my other pcs.

I don't know the newer versions of Laplink...see here

http://www.laplink.com/default.asp

I am still using their software and cables that I bought in 1988...and they still work fine to this day.

of course....the software and cables will cost around $100...so if you can buy a cd writer for less than that...why not just install a cd writer on your old pc...and burn all your old files to CDr and then capture that CDr into your new pc.

In reply to Message (7259.3.1) Idea W95 does not offer USB, try a port connection

There are several possibilities to establish a port connection between your old and your new computer. If the new one has a parallel port (most new laptops dont) you can use a parallel port null modem cable. If your new computer has no parallel port you may have to buy a USB to parallel adapter. With that you can use Total Commander from http://www.ghisler.com/ to establish the connection. After you have rescued your data you may sell the parallel port stuff because you will never need it again. Hope this helps.

An oldie but a goldie would be laplink or similar which uses the serial port and a crossover serial cable to transfer, it is slow but will do what you want. Surf the net to see if you can find some freeware (not adware)to handle the transfer.  hope this helps.

My old computer just refuses any kind of upgrade. I spent almost 8 hours yesterday trying to download and install IE4.01 but it just would not work. I got a new laptop and wanted to transfer the files from the old one but ran into a snag because it had such an old version of IE. The transfer gizmo I got from Dell requires at least IE4.01 on the old computer as does hooking up a parallel cable and running as a network using the WinXP disk. (I used Netscape for all the years and never upgraded IE.)

My old one does not have a CD writer and the new one no floppy.

I am at the point where I am emailing the very best pictures I got from member sites to myself at a second email acct. And now am considering an X-Drive acct. But either way transferring 1.3 gig will take months and my old computer is getting very cranky. It is hard to get booted up and won't last much longer.

Local places will transfer the data for $70 but how embarrassing would that be!!!

If there is another way to do this that I am ignorant of I would be forever in anyones debt who can point it out.

I cannot imagine loosing my wetlook pics. Some sites are still up and I could get the pictures back but most of the sites are now gone.

Thanks for any ideas.
