That pic is from an old Life magazine, 1947 or there abouts. The gal is identified as Janette Davis (singer who later produced "The Arthur Godfrey Show"). According to the description, they're singing a song from a musical play called "As the Girls Go". Thing is, Janette was never in that play, and there appears to never have been a movie by that name. So it must be, as you say, a recreation for a lobby card or perhaps an album cover. I posted that pic to the Photoloft on the old forum. |

By MK - wamtec@compuserve.com Fri 05/12/03 15:47:31 GMT Website: http://www.wamtec.com/sothern.jpg Yes...it's a well known scene...one of Roger Carpenters favorites too...cos of the wet stockings.
FYI...bits of that same scene were also used in the 1970 Raquel Welch stink bomb "Myra Breckinridge" too.
Here's a tantalizing pic for you...here's a publicity still of Ann Sothern & Chevalier from that same scene/film...but this picture appears to have been staged purely for the lobby cards...cos that exact scene and background does not appear in the actual scene on the film...
Not only is Ann's dress different...the 2 people in this scene don't appear to look like Ann or Maurice either...but appear to be body doubles...so this seems to be a still they recreated to promote the film...but not an actual shot from the actual scene on the film.....

In reply to Message (7249) Vintage Wetlook scene from 1935.
By JJ - vintagewet@grayhost.net Fri 05/12/03 13:27:44 GMT Website: http://vintagewet.grayhost.net/ Just finished watching an entertaining 1935 Maurice Chevalier film called 'Folies-Bergère de Paris' which has a phenominal wet dance number near the beginning. It starts out with a street scene with Maurice singing & dancing in a downpour, much like the Gene Kelly number (must have been it's inspiration). But then the scene bursts into one of those huge revolving stage sets with about 50 female dancers dressed in sequined dance-tops with garters & silk stockings (before nylon) and heels. The whole sound stage is in a deluge and they are splashing their dance number in about 6 inches of water!
It was on "CoolTV", one of the new satalite channels. I'll certainly tape it, if it's on again. Here's a bit of a write-up on it: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0026373/
