And I agree about the best wetlook being in bodies of water which are easily accessible to people just going about their daily lives (though I have not found fountains to be any good for actually looking at wetlook; the few times I've tried it people have started giving me suspicious glances and muttering about 'perverts' after about ten minutes - though it was great when I had young kids of my own to justify my presence; I helped quite a few of the other kids to soak their Mums in these days!).

And I agree that, in the UK as in the US, people simply spend less time outdoors than they did in pre-internet days.    I'm not so sure about Facebook being harmful, though, from a British perspective.     Many Brits nowadays go into the water specifically to take interesting pictures and videos to put up on social media (as a casual bystander I have often been asked to act as cameraman, though the selfie stick has rather put me out of that job these days).

Which reminds me of a story from a couple of years ago.    It was early evening, and I was walking along the waters edge of a virtually deserted Bournemouth beach, in the general direction of the station for my train home.    Suddenly two girls and one boy, all in their late teens, ran down the beach, kicked their shoes off and ran straight into the water.    One noticed me looking and smiling at her, and ran back to me, jeans, shirt and socks already completely soaked and dripping. "We always swim fully clothed - my Facebook friends say I'm crazy" she said gleefully, clearly relishing the notoriety.    I said "This would look good on Facebook...." intending to offer to take some pictures on my phone and text or email them to her (nasty manipulative person that I am!), but she was already gone, back into the water and all running in the direction from which I had come, so that I could not 'naturally' follow - and anyway, I had a train to catch.     Three weeks later, and I was back at the same place, late afternoon this time, and there was a girl of about the same age as that group, plus a friend about ten years older, who had waded to just above the knee without rolling up their trousers.    I splashed up to them to encourage them in further, and they said "we don't normally come to the beach, but we have a crazy friend who says on Facebook that she regularly goes in fully clothed, so we thought we'd try it"    Yes, really!

But they didn't go in any further.    Why?    Well, MikeyABQ has put his finger on it in post 70157.1 above.    They had smartphones.    Everybody nowadays is festooned with electronic gadgets - smartphones, personal music players, car keys with remote-locking, debit cards with chips and now also contactless capability, even my pensioner's bus pass has an electronic gizmo in it to tell the ticket machine who I am.      In the UK, at least, it is not Facebook but personal electronics which is killing wetlook (if anything is).

Things certainly have changed in the US.  We are generally better prepared for the weather now, with AC in our homes and cars and forecasts to ensure we are not overdressed when we go out.  It once was that you would get so hot and sweaty on a hot day that you looked and felt awful.  So going for a swim was a relief, a joy, and an improvement in your situation.  Not anymore.  I also think people of a more adventuresome age don't spend as much time outdoors as we did so long ago and they are hyper-aware of what others will say about it on their Facebook pages.  FB has pretty much killed spontaneity and frivolity.

Another thing I notice is that almost no young women go braless anymore.  That was very common in the 1970s and '80s when people cared more about their health and freedom.  If I replayed the "tape" in my mind of all of the women I saw back then going into the water with clothes on but no bra, it would run for hours.  (And probably drive me insane.)  Modern times are simply not very interesting by comparison, so I don't waste my time seeking it out.

The real key to seeing public wetlook, probably everywhere, is to go where there is water and unexpected hot weather.  The first couple of hot spells in the spring are best - before people have their hot weather routines and clothing all settled.  There is a beer celebration next to a large fountain in downtown Portland, Oregon during the summer which could probably yield hours of valuable tape for MK if the weekend happened to be really hot like it was a couple of years ago.  Pretty amazing.  I've also found fountains to be better than beaches in general.  People don't generally plan and dress to go swimming in a fountain.  And you can watch from much closer in.  Warm nights can also be good around a fountain.  End of the day, dinner and a few drinks to loosen up, going home next, so why not?

...not just Latinas (thanks for clearing that up, Laszlo and Bruno); so what happened?     Have things changed (if so, why?), or are Forum members nowadays just looking in the wrong places?    Does anybody know of publicly-accessible places in the US where fully clothed 'candid' swimming is still as common as Laszlo describes in California in the 1980s?

Interesting that you found lots of wetlook in the US without even trying, yet Americans on this Forum regularly lament the lack of candid wetlook in their country (eg the response to my posting "wet(ish)" pics from Yorkshire last summer was "too bad this isn't the norm on American beaches").     I can't really comment from first-hand experience, since I've never been to the US in summer - though I've found quite a few pics of US beaches with what looks like random people getting their clothes wet in the background.    Have things really changed since the 1980s, or are people looking in the wrong place now?

[Was your friend Latino, by any chance, Laszlo?     I definitely do not mean that as a put-down (my present would-be lover is Mexican) but the Californians I met when my sister lived over there talked about "Mexicans swim in their clothes" as a kind of local cliche.    My lady friend got quite angry when I mentioned that to her; at first I thought that meant she was anti-wetlook (despite the fact that she was wearing wet jeans at the time), but later discovered that she is just very very sensitive about Americans putting down Mexicans - you should hear what she says about Trump lol....]

Dear Members of the Forum,

I was a university student in Hungary in the 1980s, when we had a communist system in the country. We called it “socialism” and the national motto was that we were building communism. It is to be mentioned that the edifice has never been completed, fortunately. That time everybody was expected to behave according to generally accepted rules and social standards, including the use of clothes – swimwear in water.

There were several American students at our university, and one of them and I became very good friends. He even invited me to spend a summer with his family in America. One of their cars was a vintage Ford Mustang, and I could use it if I had to go somewhere. In those years in Hungary we could only buy obsolete flivvers produced in the European communist (socialist) countries, e.g.: https://www.hobbydb.com/subjects/trabant-brand  .You can imagine what an experience it was for me to drive it.

As we were living not far from the Pacific Ocean, one day we went to the beach, where I was amazed to see women wading into the water in their clothes, and having a blast there. That time I was fully convinced that my interest in wet clothes was some sort of sexual aberration, so I did not call any attention to the sight, and simply enjoyed the spectacle.

A few weeks later we visited relatives in San Diego. I had some business to manage at different embassies in Los Angeles, so my friend’s mother took me there by car, in a huge one, probably an Oldsmobile or Chevrolet which she borrowed from the family. After finishing my business we headed back along the coast. To describe the weather I can quote the actor Robin Williams (1951 – 2004) from the film, “Good Morning, Vietnam”. “It was hot. Damned hot. Real hot. Hotter than things in my shorts. I could cook things in it.” The ocean looked cool, tempting and inviting. All of a sudden there was a parking lot (car park), my friend’s mother veered in and said: “Let’s go into the water.” As we had no swimwear with us, it was obvious that she meant swimming fully clothed. What can I say? I wholeheartedly supported the motion. We only took off our shoes and accepted the invitation of the water. My friend’s mother was over the age of forty, her white blouse became totally see-through, but it did not bother her at all, and we had a truly good time swimming about in the ocean.

After a while we came out of the water, sloshed our way back to the car and continued our journey. Sitting in the car in our drenched clothes we did not even need the air conditioning, and could keep the windows down.

I gained really nice memories in the “land of the free, and the home of the brave”. Do you agree?

Best regards,

László
