I was a university student in Hungary in the 1980s, when we had a communist system in the country. We called it “socialism” and the national motto was that we were building communism. It is to be mentioned that the edifice has never been completed, fortunately. That time everybody was expected to behave according to generally accepted rules and social standards, including the use of clothes – swimwear in water.

There were several American students at our university, and one of them and I became very good friends. He even invited me to spend a summer with his family in America. One of their cars was a vintage Ford Mustang, and I could use it if I had to go somewhere. In those years in Hungary we could only buy obsolete flivvers produced in the European communist (socialist) countries, e.g.: https://www.hobbydb.com/subjects/trabant-brand  .You can imagine what an experience it was for me to drive it.

As we were living not far from the Pacific Ocean, one day we went to the beach, where I was amazed to see women wading into the water in their clothes, and having a blast there. That time I was fully convinced that my interest in wet clothes was some sort of sexual aberration, so I did not call any attention to the sight, and simply enjoyed the spectacle.

A few weeks later we visited relatives in San Diego. I had some business to manage at different embassies in Los Angeles, so my friend’s mother took me there by car, in a huge one, probably an Oldsmobile or Chevrolet which she borrowed from the family. After finishing my business we headed back along the coast. To describe the weather I can quote the actor Robin Williams (1951 – 2004) from the film, “Good Morning, Vietnam”. “It was hot. Damned hot. Real hot. Hotter than things in my shorts. I could cook things in it.” The ocean looked cool, tempting and inviting. All of a sudden there was a parking lot (car park), my friend’s mother veered in and said: “Let’s go into the water.” As we had no swimwear with us, it was obvious that she meant swimming fully clothed. What can I say? I wholeheartedly supported the motion. We only took off our shoes and accepted the invitation of the water. My friend’s mother was over the age of forty, her white blouse became totally see-through, but it did not bother her at all, and we had a truly good time swimming about in the ocean.

After a while we came out of the water, sloshed our way back to the car and continued our journey. Sitting in the car in our drenched clothes we did not even need the air conditioning, and could keep the windows down.

I gained really nice memories in the “land of the free, and the home of the brave”. Do you agree?
