The biggest "water jets" I know of are at the Hallmark Gold Crown Center in Kansas City, MO. The fountain is in front of a shopping mall. I was only there once, but it was during a blistering heat wave and adults & kids alike were running in fully clothed. Another jet fountain is in Lousiville, KY, in the park downtown by the river. It is mostly kids and families most of the time, but they often have concerts on the river and it gets very busy when those let out. Between that fountain and the river are several pools with water canons that "stair-step" down to the river. These are marked "No swimming or wading", but on hot weekends are often full of people anyway. The cops seem to ignore them as long as no one is causing trouble. There is a Simon shopping mall in Atlanta that has a jet fountain. I believe it is called "Georgia Mall", but I'm not sure. I've only seen pictures of this one at their HQ here in Indianapolis. Check www.simon.com for details. Last but certainly not least, there are two great fountains that I have personal experience with on the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette, IN. One is in front of the admin building, a.k.a. Hovde Hall, and the other is in Founders Park. They are ususally busiest on weekends, July, 4th, and any hot evening when the regular sessions begin in August. |

By Sopping - Sun 02/11/03 04:23:17 GMT The really great series of Paris fountain pix taken by many contributors here have set me to a-wonderin'.
As I simplify things, there appear to be two major categories of fountains. The massive, park-setting ornamental fountain, and the people-friendly jets as shown in Paris.
In the latter, there appear to be minimal restrictions, but the former ranges from "acceptance" of authorities at times of celebration or heat-wave (e.g. Trafalgar); to the total "keep-out" policies: Rome's Trevi; the DC FDR Memorial; and many many others. I once talked the National Park Police to grant me a "permit" to take pix at the Banneker fountain in L'Enfant Plaza Washington, (remember my "VIckie" series? I was never able to get it renewed.
But aside from the Atlanta Olympic festival fountain (also with people-friendly jets), can anyne come up with other flat, jet-type fountains where people can play without worrying about the cops? I am not including paid-admission parks, (Universal) where sometimes this can be done.
Of course, an advantage of the flat, jet type fountain is that there is no "bowl" in which broken glass has been known to lurk.
Just passing thoughts.
