I am a firm believer that those who do what they do well, deserve to make a good living at it. So my vote is for which ever alternative gives you the best combination of satisfaction, freedom and financial return. I don't know enough about the pay site world to know how good the potential rewards are, though I can imagine that there is a lot of work and administration involved. I would also guess that subscribers might want more frequent updates (weekly rather than biweekly perhaps?) which just adds to administration.

And perhaps one other possibility is to try both. I am admittedly niave about the logistics of setting up a site so that may not be viable as a "trial". But doing both would be one way to test the waters, experience the "joys" of running a site (maybe in partnership with someone?) and then make an informed decision on how you want to continue. You already have a substantial reputation and following in the community so you should certainly have a running start in terms of attracting membership to a pay site.
