I can tell you that in Northern Europe the water is still cold in the summer months, not so cold as the winter, but still cold. I work in a bar / restaurant, part of a small chain and one of the other bars gave us a Coldwater Challenge. We were told in a team meeting at the beginning of our shift, which had at the end of the shift we must jump in the nearby pond. We were not allowed to go for a change of clothes back home and had to swim in what clothes we wore. It was clear that those who refused would be to let the bar down. At 3:00 we were given to wear bright orange armbands all and prepared to jump into the pond from a dock, all of waiting, bar and kitchen staff. Little did I know think when putting on work clothes that I would be swim in them less than 5 hours later! The water felt incredibly cold in any case, it was a shock going into the water and I was shaking when I go out. They gave us each a large towel to dry a little, but was still to get at home wet and back at work again at 6:00. This was only a dare and there was nothing involved to do with charity. Sorry for my bad English. |

By MK - wamtec@comcast.net Fri 08/08/14 17:07:49 GMT I can understand the many Polar Plunge events that are charity events for the Special Olympics..and all those are REAL "cold water" events....because they are held in the winter months....
...but why are all these current so called "Cold Water" challenges being done IN THE SUMMER MONTHS.....
The water is NOT cold in the summer months.....and the only cold water challenges that are cold are the ones with buckets of ice.....so 99% of these current cold water challenges are a joke....cos most of these have popped up Youtube in the last 2 months...when the water was not cold at all.
BTW.....what I said 2 weeks ago has now come true....i.e. standing under a front end loader or dumper truck is VERY stupid and dangerous...I said somebody might get killed if that dumper drops on their head....and now I see that has just happened and somebody died ....
I do not get innuendo bingo either......whats the point of that....is it because they are celebrating that developments in Aids research have now become more advanced so now it is perfectly OK to spit on people now....cos nobody would dare create a spitting game in the 1980's and 90's when such a think would have been taboo.

By Anonymous - Fri 08/08/14 11:56:51 GMT This started off in the USA as a stunt to raise money for charity. You had to challenge other people to get soaked and then film yourself getting wet and post it on Facebook, YouTube etc. Sometimes it was simply a bucket of cold water over the head, other times a jump into a lake or swimming pool. People who refused to do the same thing had to give a greater amount to charity. As the craze went viral across the internet, the charity part got lost and it just became a dare to see people get wet. Individuals or groups of people can get challenged. For example in my town the entire staff of a local restaurant jumped in a nearby pond at the end of their shift. |

By newbiwet - Fri 08/08/14 08:42:04 GMT one of the rules is: who is nominated for the "cold water challenge" has to do it, and to prove it (e.g. on youtube). Who don't do it has to arrange a barbecue (including beer, as far as I know) for the nominator. Companys, clubs an ao on can be nominated. Who has accomplished the challenge has to nominate others. And yes it's also for charity, some donate something, some don't. And of course it's for fun. (hope it's understandable, I'm not a native speaker) |

By jollywetfellow - Wed 06/08/14 23:23:00 GMT Wonderful to see so many real women getting wet; a refreshing change from the "girls" (as the producers seem to call them) common on the forum. Does anyone know what this is about? Why is "Cold Water Challenge" always in English when the rest is German? Who is challenging whom to do what? (OK, I can see the 'what' is "get wet in cold water" but are there rules, is it for charity, etc?) |
