cd path\to\downloads\folder

wget some_url

This will automatically resume if the download stops working, something most browsers still suck rocks at.

I grant you, it's a nerd's approach. DownThemAll! for Firefox is a better bet for non-technical folks, though it's still not the ideal "just download it you cocksucking browser" option that remains so elusive after all these years. I mean, I can resume transfers by hand, it's really that easy.
