As Leon said, the moat water is not a problem because before Songkran they pump thousands of gallons of disinfectants into it.......I have been there 25 times since 1979 and never got sick due to the water in the moat....which gives your clothing a fragrance I call "Canal Number 5".....ha ha

Seriously though, the most common injury I have gotten a few times...were eye injuries....where one of the neanderthal farangs (foreigners)  belonging to a tribe called "the shirtless baldies" (i.e. drunken European tourists who act like football hooligans) will deliberately aim a high powered watergun at your eyes....so the most important thing to remember is to wear sunglasses or protective eyewear to protecting your eyes from the neanderthals. Several times I had an eye injurry,,,,so...protect your eyes. Personally...I prefer to go to areas where the local people hang out...and I avoid those rowdy bars where all the European tourists hang out.

The food is great over there...even the street food, and I have never gotten sick from the food, but 2-3 times I caught a serious cold with chills and shakes due to walking around the shopping malls while wearing a wet t shiirt.....because the outside temps are about 100 dgerees....but the temps inside those shopping malls are kept at a very cool 60 degrees.....so if you walk off a 100 degree street into a 60 degree shopping mall in wet clothes...you can catch pneumonia.....so I try to let my clothes dry out before walking inside the chilly mall....cos walking around a chilly shopping mall can play havoc with your body.

Regarding the dates.....Songkarn always ends on the 15th in Chiang Mai....and the city is a "ghost town" on the 16th......so the 16th is a good "travel day" to travel from Chiang Mai back to Bangok and onto Pattaya...cos Songkran does not start in Pattya until the 18th or 19th to the 20th..

So....the perfect itinerary to visit 2 Songkran festivals...is

- arrive in Chiang Mai by April 11th...cos Songran starts in Chiang Mail on April 12th (although if you arrive earlier....you can see stuff happening on the 10th and 11th too)

- stay in Chiang Mail for April 12 to 15

- On April 16...travel to Pattaya

- Nothing much happens in Pattaya on the 17th....but you can relax by the beach.

- On the 18th to 21st you will see another Songkran in Pattaya.

Have fun.....wish I could go this year....but I have lots of things going on with my house sale right now....so I cannot go this year..

They pump in loads of disinfectant or something in the days leading up to Songkran, seriously, they do, tanker trucks of the stuff.  Have never caught anything from the water and I have been there several times during Songkran.

The worst I get is an ear infection from all the water being constantly thrown.

I also get quite annoyed, the water attacking is actually relentless, even as a wetlook fan I'm happy when it's over.  lol

Was to Songkran in Pattaya last year and found it really amazing. This year as last year, my Thai girlfriend and I plan on spending time in Thailand during songkran. Either Pattaya or Chiang Mai (that i hear everyone tell is so amazing :) ). Now I have one ting that bugs my mind. Moat water. As a wetlook fan I will spend a lot of time outdoors, and probably swallow a lot of that water hehe.. Just wondering if anyone here has been there, and have any kind of first hand experience whit the moat water .. Secondly -does anyone know if Songkran ends 15th or 16th in Chiang Mai (My Thai girlfriend was not sure as she have never been to that part of the country).  I was planning on flying to Pattaya the 16th to take part in the last songkran days there.
