No, the radio stations pay money to get the rights to play the songs. If I remember correctly from my days working at a (non-profit) community radio station, we payed a couple hundred bucks each year to AASCAP (the musicians union). The union in turn disburses the money to its members. For profit radio stations have to pay the record companies, based on size of market, strength of signal, market share, format and other arcane issues. There have been some attempts at "software radio stations", but they've been pretty much doomed electronically. The recording companies want them to follow the cable-TV or satellite radio model and charge for subscriptions, so they've made the royalty cost (the amount paid to be able to play that companies music) absurdly high. (Essentially, they consider the market to be much larger than it really is in practice.) For most music, there is no free online channel. File sharing systems do not actually have the legal right to make that content available for download. There are sites (either subscription or advertising supported) like davidbowie.com that do make content available for personal download, but they don't allow it to be freely reassigned (i.e., you can't give it to other people.) |

By DDMan - ddman@rcsis.com Wed 10/09/03 06:04:17 GMT Public radio is illegal. I never paid to listen to the songs on the local radio stations. If I hear a song on the radio, record it for my PERSONAL use (and no other), how is that illegal? It was publicly distributed. |

By Whyohwhycantthingsbsimple - Wed 10/09/03 05:25:27 GMT Because you haven't paid for the privelidge of listening to it! If EVERYONE felt the same way as you, how would the artists ever get paid?? It's just the same as cracking a Members area for 'your own use' |

By David - spawn75@bellsouth.net Wed 10/09/03 03:13:12 GMT Unless the person who is downloading it is selling it, there's not a copyright violation. It's only illegal if somebody is making a profit off it. If I go download a song online for my personal use, how is that illegal? |
In reply to Message (5814.1) It's called stealing
By Anon - Wed 10/09/03 01:59:33 GMT Simple as that. It is no different than walking into a store, pulling a CD off the shelf, slipping it in your pocket and walking out the door. Songs and videos are the products that artists sell in order to make a living. |
