Kerry is correct....there is actually no new footage or new shows being aired. I have all these on tape from over 10 years ago. These were all aired in the 1980's...all they did was, to first sell this footage to German television in the mid 1990's, where it was re-edited and dubbed in German...and now TNN (spike tv) are doing the same thing...i.e. taking the same old footage, and adding their own english commentary to it.
Sadly, there has been no revival of this show...it's the same old footage from the 1980's being rehashed and repeated again and again.
I guess thats the cheap way these new cable channels do things these days...i.e. they have no money to spend...so rather than going to the expense of creating their own programming...it's a lot cheaper just to buy some old footage and then get a couple of idiot unfunny commentators to overdub english commentary to it....and thats hardly original either....cos Mystery Science Theater 3K have been re-hashing old movies in that style for years.
FYI...the only "new" show that has been spawned from Takeshi's castle...is the Spanish gameshow called GRAND PRIX...which is on the air at this time...cos they have taken exact same games from Takeshi's castle (ie. the giant logs over the water game) and used those same props in their gameshow.
....so if you wish to see a modern rendering of those same games...tune into the TVE channel from Spain to see the GRAND PRIX gameshow each week. TVE is available on all european satellites and aired in the usa on the dish network system.
mk
ps...I should add, that GRAND PRIX follows the same format as the French gameshow INTERVILLES...and likewise the UK's "It's a knockout", and European renderings of "Jeux San Frontieres" or Germany's TELEMATCH show....they are all inter-related. |

By Kerry Tiller - kctiller@cox.net Sun 07/09/03 20:52:56 GMT That was a Japanese show hosted by "Beat" Takeshi (of "Super Jockey" fame among others). It was on in the late 80s. Unless there has been a revival, I imagine what is playing here are the old re-runs. I will have to look for it. Beat Takeshi was always getting girls wet on his shows. Thanks for the tip. |

By Gooby - Sun 07/09/03 10:13:24 GMT I don't know if anyone has mentioned this already. There is an Asian show that has been talked about before called Takeshi's Castle which is about... well... I don't know how to explain it. Its a bunch of physical challenges where contestants usually end up in muddy water. They are now airing these with humourously dubbed english speaking announcers on the Spike TV network (formerly TNN.) Even if you don't like wetlook it is worth watching. |
