Credit card fraud is like shoplifting.....i.e. all store owners and website owners will surely encounter it, and the industry stats are that anybody who runs a store (online or offline) will incur 2% to 5%^ in such losses every year. There is no way to 100% prevent it....all you can do is contain and control and minimize it, and if you can contain it to less than 2% of your business, then you are doing a good job at controlling it.

I know all the major wam producers and their hosting company managers and they have enacted automatic triggers to flag suspicious transactions, and those get flagged and dealt with on the same day.

I will not go into detail on what those flags and triggers are.....but we catch most suspicious transactions and cancel them....so in most cases they never reach the chargeback stage, cos we already caught it can cancelled the charge so the charge never goes thru.

If you want to know more details on how we flag suspicious transactions, just email me...cos we do not discuss our system security measures on a public forum.

Seeing as there are 300 wam producers today, producers should probably have their own forum where they can exchange ideas and talk shop.....cos currently we do not have a Producers forum area on this forum nor on UMD or Graham's forum. UMD has a producers lounge area, but that is useless cos it is wide open to public viewing from all users, and we would need a producers forum or lounge area that is totally private and not open to the public. Our cc hosting manager (theMothership) did set up a Wam Producers forum 3 years ago....but nobody used it so he shut it down.

Anyway.....he reality is....you cannot prevent 100% of all chargebacks....cos there will always be some chargebacks that can slip thru our automatic flagging system that flags suspicious transactions....and all you can do is contain it to 2% or less of your monthly transactions.

I thought I'd ask here. I thinking of starting an e-commerce site for hosiery. You may know that this is my main interest.

Recently I had a case at my work with a client paying by credit card over the phone, but her accountant screwed up and reported this charge as "fraud". Even with a copy of the signed (by the owner) invoice confirming delivery of goods, this case was lost. That client is an honest person, she tried to contact the bank... but you know how banks are, they never returned her messages. She is a good woman, so she'll settle this somehow anyway.

I hear from some small stores that they get chargeback issues from time to time. For example, a person buys $400 bikini and then just cancels the transaction. Another store had a guy buy $300 jeans twice and cancel that transaction twice. Legal theft? Horrible!

So I want to know, how do you prevent chargebacks? When you are an online business, you can't physically see the credit card. Please let me know if there are any cases here to protect yourself from this kind of stuff. I've heard some people use "verified by Visa" system.
