True.....and remember that there used to be 2 certainties in life....Death and Taxes....but now there are 3 certainties in life.....Death, Taxes and Video Piracy....

And anybody who thinks they can control video piracy.....will find this to be as futile as King Canute attempting to control the waves 1000 years ago.....

So...Chris Dodd can plant his throne on the beach and he will achieve nothing...cos the waves of video pirates will wash over him as they did to King Canute.

SOPA is only US, and despite its military and economic prominence, the US is not the world. The internet is worldwide. China has tried to censor the internet (internally) and hasn't really achieved the underlying goals. That's because the laws and regulations of any one nation can only be of national scope and not affect anything outside of their political boundaries. If the US imposes sufficiently strict regulation on the internet, it will merely force the creation of an alternative. Just because the internet has its beginnings in a US defense project doesn't mean it will always be under control of the US government (or that it is today).

You need only look at the statistics for (legitimate) ecommerce to see how important the internet in its current form has become, and how messing about with it via legislation like SOPA can only do more harm than good, assuming that enforcement will even be practical.

Even the US has bigger fish to fry these days than supporting Hollywood. Admittedly, Hollywood is the US' biggest, most effective propaganda machine, and that probably earns it some consideration by the US government. But the US economy is likely not affected by a loss of revenue to piracy (which is probably only theoretical), and creation of jobs outside Hollywood is of far greater importance to the US economy than profits salvaged from piracy reduction. You can look at consumers of IP (movies, music, software, games) as falling into one of three groups: purchasers who only buy through authorized channels (either because they are honest or don't have the means or opportunity to pirate), those who will never pay (either because they refuse to or because they can't afford to), and those who only pay when they have to. No matter how large the group of  "never pay", no anti-piracy measure will recover revenue from them because they never pay... they will do without or find a way to circumvent the anti-piracy measure. Those who always pay will not provide any further revenue because they are already paying anyway. The only revenue impact will come from those who only pay when they have to, and I suspect it is a small enough segment that that any revenue gain from implementing more and more anti-piracy measures will be offset by the eventual costs.

Sure, it makes sense to put certain anti-piracy measures in place to "keep the majority honest", but beyond a certain point, there are diminishing returns, and eventually measures start to create more problems than they solve. In light of what else is already in place, SOPA is likely more of a problem than a solution.

We live on a planet these days that is called Google Earth.....i.e. so goes Google....so goes the rest of the world.

All you have to do is look at the list of major entities that are opposing this law....i.e. Google, AOL and many other major entities...and you can see the only people supporting this law are Hollywood and the major broadcasting entities, but all the major ISPs and hosting companies are against it. Google own Youtube and they are going to protect their baby until hell freezes over....so Youtube is the umbrella that shelters our Wambank site from being shut down....cos both our sites operate under the current DMCA law of 1998 (which says....you can allow something to be posted and stay online , until somebody complains and then you must take it down). So....theWambank will stay open until the day that Youtube gets shut down....and that is never gonna happen. Cos.....Google are more or less a quasi U.S. government department these days....cos they have their tentacles all over the U.S. government these days. Their top leaders are already working for the Obama administration and they are working closely with U.S. military on defense and tracking systems too. Google are basically "untouchable" these days...cos they are within the U.S. government already....and that makes Youtube untouchable too.

With this new SOPA proposed law.....this is all coming from the U.S. Motion Picture Association of American (MPAA) which is now headed by a former U.S. Senator called Chris Dodd.....one of the most corrupt or inept Senators of all time....who used to be in charge of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee that was "supposed" to oversea the banks, and who did NOTHING to raise red flags that could have prevented the collapse of the U.S. banking system, Lehman Brothers, Fannie and Freddie and subsequent collapse of the U.S. housing market and economy etc. So....you have a corrupt and disgraced former Senator who gets voted out of office for the role he played in the collapse of the banking system and real estate market, and so he leaves office at the time when former MPAAA president Jack Valenti dies.....so Chris Dodd lands this cushy job taking over from Valenti as the new head of the MPAA. Chris Dodd should be sitting in a jail cell for his corrupt acts with the Countrywide bank while a U.S. Senator....but he escapes a jail cell and now lands this cushy high paid job where he can canoodle with the celebrities in Hollywood. So....Chris Dodd now decides he wants to be a warrior for the movie and tv industry, so he is behind this proposed SOPA law.

This proposed law is a crock.......it is like that old joke about proposing to control immigration by building a 15 ft fence along the border.....i.e. if you build a 15ft fence.....then this will create a new industry where people will be selling 20 ft ladders.....

....i.e. the Feds have been seizing domain names of selected torrent sites for the last 2 years....and this has no effect at all....cos they only seize their domain name....,not their ip address....and nobody cares about their domain name (unless it is a world famous brand name)....cos when they seize your domain...you just go to Godaddy and buy a new name for $8....so the site still remains online under the ip address numbers or the new name you buy. None of the major torrents sites who had their domain names seized have actually been shut down....they just changed to a new domain name the very next day.

Anyway.....as I said....this is merely Chris Dodd trying to make a name for himself with his Hollywood friends....but this law is going nowhere and will never get passed, cos Youtuble is owned by Google...and Google is so heavily entrenched inside the U.S. government these days anyways, Google will use their high paid lobbyists to get this bill killed for sure.

The real irony is....if Chris Dodd had done his job properly when he was a Senator and head of the U.S. Senate Banking committee...and controlled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and Wall Street Banks better.....then the U.S. real estate market would not have collapsed and we would not have gone into recession and have the high employment that we have today.....cos if people were not struggling to survive these days......then they would have more spendable income to GO TO THE MOVIES and pay for movies etc......but when you have a recession and high unemployment.....then human nature is that less people will pay to see movies...and people are more likely to be looking for free downloads instead.  So....Chris Dodd was one of the main players that has caused the increased in piracy....cos if you cause a recession....then this will increase more video piracy....and thats just human nature. If Chris Dodd had done his job while heading the heading the U.S. Senate Banking committee....instead of doing insider deals with Countrywide.....then we would not have seen a collapse in the banking and real estate industry and high unemployment....and then video piracy would be much lower today....cos more people could then afford to go to the movies etc.

So...for me...Chris Dodd is like that old joke about the kid who kills his parents...and then complains that he is an orphan and wants people to feel sorry for him.....i.e. you were at the center of causing this situation to happen.

Anyway.....as I said....our sites like TheWambank......will stay open as long as Youtube remains open.....and that will be...until hell freezes over.

This forum is not in any danger.....cos Nigel has several other alternate domains he can use and things can switch to another domain the very next day.
