Some good points made already. With what's said so far - I go with the idea that the fashion industry created "wetlook" with PVC and other shiny clothes, slick-backed hairstyles that *looked* wet even though they really were not. It does seem funny that a term that was originally created to describe an appearance of wetness is now the common term that we seem to use today. Just like the comment about Pineapples (How about Guinea Pigs?) it isn't the most technically accurate description, but it is what has come to be generally accepted. JMHO though (JMHO = Just My Humble Opinion)

I could never figure it out either. I first encountered the term "wetlook" as something that looks wet even though it isn't... usually fashion items like clothing. Funny thing is that I never really understood why someone would value a wet look, even as I was exploring and enjoying wet clothing.

Why do we call it wetlook? The only explanation I can offer is that it was arbitrary. The term WAM (wet and messy) covers more territory, so in order to label our specific interest in wet clothing, apparently suggested "wetlook", and it stuck. I think the rationale was that it is about wet, and for the most part, guys just look. I think that correct or not, that rationalization is pretty weak. Personally, I don't like the term "wetlook" because it was originally coined for a different purpose (simulating the look of something wet), and it isn't intuitively very obvious that it means what we are using it to mean.

Why don't we just start calling it what it is: wet clothing?
