At first it would be helpful to know what a transmission you have. I think in a 1995er car you don't have one of the "good old" TH400 or TH700. The repair of the newer ones (which are controlled by a control unit) is quite expensive, but it should be possible to do it for less than $2000. Even when I cannot repair a transmission, it seems for me like you have a broken bracket belt. Perhaps there is only one mechanical component in your transmission to replace and everything works fine. Before you worry about confusing storys told in your car workshop, I suggest to try the link above - for example. In the Netherlands there are many workshops specialized for repairing automatic transmissions. Many times I was at Ganzeboom/Netherlands buying spare parts for my old job. Two years ago I worked for "Lothar", the employee of www.automatikgetriebe.de. You can call him also, but his English is "a little" worse than mine (therefore you should talk with his son "Tobi"). The workshops in the Netherlands work for whole Europe - they speak German, French, Spain, ...

Besides: Don't worry abut the long distance to a workshop out of England. The workshop you can contact via www.automatikgetriebe.de is in Gladbeck (~60 km from Düsseldorf) / Germany and has customers in Norway, Greece, Spain ... but as i know not in England. This might have one reason: "Lothar" from www.automatikgetriebe.de told quite often, that in England there are lots of little car workshops, where they don't dread repairing a automatic transmission for themselves - without consulting a specialized workshop. Perhaps you should only look for another car workshop in your country. If don't find one, I have a last tip for you:

When I have the money for my next car - a 2000er/2001er Dodge Ram - maintenance and repair will be done by a specialist for American cars. Now he repairs automatic transmissions for himself. You can reach him via http://www.power-by-lehnert.de/ .

Good luck!

Last night the transmission on my 1995 oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera died.  I was going down the road and all of a sudden with no warning it lost power and started slowing down while the engine revved like if you press the accelerator while in park or neutral.  I pulled over, shifted to park and then back into drive, and it started moving at a maximum speed of 20 MPH  and was making a horrible grinding noise.  I made it home (about one mile away).  It seems about 99% likely that the transmission is blown.  A rebuilt transmission will cost around $2000 parts and labor.  That is a lot of freaking money for me!  I don't know if this piece of crap car is worth it.  It might be time to send this car to the crusher.  It only has 98,000 miles.  A transmission should last longer than that.  Buying another car would cost a lot more, though.  I have already spent about $700 on repairs of other problems with this clunker this year.  I can't afford a brand new car at my meager pay rate.  My savings are almost depleted after paying $362.09 per month for COBRA health insurance to my old job for the past year.  I have managed to stay out of debt all of my life until now, but that will probably end very soon.  I have another car, a 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity with 173,000 miles.  it has been quite reliable for the last 12 years, but a car with 23 years and 173,000 miles could drop dead any time.  I need to have 2 cars, since pieces of junk are all I can afford.  I NEED MORE MONEY!!!
