We had a private silver and gold currency in the U.S. a few years ago. It was called the "Liberty Dollar". Produced by NORFED (the National ORganization for the repeal of the FEDeral reserve act), it consisted of one ounce silver tokens and one ounce gold tokens. The silver tokens started at $10USD and rose with the increasing value of silver. They reached $50. The gold tokens started out at $500 and reached $2000. Sadly, the U.S. mint declared them to be "counterfeit coins" and the creator, Bernard VonNothaus, was convicted of counterfeiting and is now probably headed to prison. Those who held the Liberty Dollar paper certificates are now holding worthless paper (except for exonumismatic value), as the silver and gold they were redeemable for was confiscated by the government. The Liberty Dollar's official website was taken down my court order, but you can find more information about what the Liberth Dollar was by doing a Google or Yahoo search fo"liberty dollar", "NORFED", or "Bernard VonNothaus".

...i.e. if the Federal Reserve keeps following their insane economic policy of "Quantitative Easing" (a fancy term boffins use....which means....when you are out of money...just keep on printing more paper money to flood the market) this causes currency devaluation and hyper-inflation on a massive scale as happened during the Weimar Republic in Germany in 1923 and in Hungary in 1946, and more recently in Zimbabwe....causing the currency to become so worthless that people had to scoop up wheelbarrows of banknotes just to buy a loaf of bread...

Those of us who have savings in other currencies (not the Euro, cos that is going to crash soon too)....might be able to buy one million dollars using only 100 UK Pounds pretty soon....but frankly, the way things are going these days, I would rather sell my domain for 10 x 1 ounce gold coins (which is currently worth $15,000) than to sell it for paper currency.....cos I reckon within a few years that 10 ounces of gold is probably going to be worth a lot more than the U.S. Dollar or the Euro will be worth.
