Here in Poland almost no one get's a Russian visa directly from the embassy. People go to specialist travel agents (a lot of them around the embassy) and they get it done for them. It does cost quite a lot (though still less then $400), but it's generally hassle free. You must have some sort of such travel agents in the USA also. And you can also try obtaining a visa in Europe. You should get it in your home country, but this is not really strictly enforced. It would be a very good idea for you to go to Russia. A photographer working for many will never obtain the same amount and quality of material that a true wetlook lover can. And as Russia's fountain season is short (sure, they may be on in May, but that's not the time you see people in them): generally late June, July & August it's pretty easy to go for half of the season without losing much time from work. And anyway, as New York, Tokyo or Rio, Moscow is a kind of "must see place". Well worth the hassle to get there. BTW: The Ukraine (with stuff going on not only in Kiev but also Lviv and especially Odessa - on the Black Sea with a longer wetlook season) has the most relaxed visa laws and is the most friendly and accommodating of the three countries (Russia, Belarus, Ukraine). Might wanna go there next year in June, during the Euro Soccer Championships. There may be celebrating in fountains (which is less likely in the other host country - Poland, as most celebrators are usually locals and the Polish team probably won't win a single match ;)) |

By MK - wamtec@comcast.net Sun 01/05/11 13:14:55 GMT Unfortunately you can't place much reliance on general shutter-bugs to film scenes properly at the fountains in Russia, cos they always use low quality cellphone cameras to make videoclips, with erratic camerawork, so all the stuff that gets posted to youtube is always lousy quality. You have to take the bull by the horns and arrange for cameramen to film things properly with a DV or HD camcorder, cos I have yet to see any decent quality youtubes in past years, and that is why I arrange for my own camera guys to be there instead. I would love to go there myself, but I tried last year and the paperwork to get a visa was worse than my tax return, and you need a sponsor, and then the visa processing fees are ridiculous ($400+), so I gave up trying to get there myself and hired some local camera guys instead.
FYI, I have arranged for camera guys to film things in Moscow, Kiev and Minsk starting later this month, but I lost 2 of my camera guys who have either left Russia to work overseas or they have retired, so I am still looking for additional camera guys in Moscow (cos I only have 2 guys covering Moscow and there are over 20 fountains in Moscow so 2 guys cannot be covering all of these fountains), plus I lost my camera guy in St Petersburg, so if anybody living in Russia wants a free camcorder and travel expenses, plus labor time compensation, contact me and join our camera team and then you will get free access to the 200+ hours of Russian fountains media we have collected on DVD so far.
