I see, Nigel comes up with the exact same scheme I use for backup, even the one in the garage! I buy them once every 2 years, and do not use them on a daily basis. Redundancy FTW!
As I own a 500 GB WD drive myself, I know that some of these have a "sleep" function, based on software and separate hardware. The sleep-function also lets the drive wake up; so it might be this part that's broken. Look into the manual, maybe there you are told how to restart the software.
Generally: 1. look at the cables, 2. look at the sockets (I had problems with a USB socket on the computer lately), maybe the comp just doesn't recognize the external HD, so it whirrs but doesn't show up among the HDs. 3. switch cables and sockets
Good luck. |
In reply to Message (47905.4) If it's clicking...
By Nigel - nigel@wetlook.com Tue 14/12/10 16:06:27 GMT If it's clicking madly, then it's having trouble reading the disk. It may be recoverable, at cost, there are plenty of recovery services about, you need to take your disk to them, and they will obviously see what the files are. You may loose some data, but most should still be readable.
BUT: lesson for all here, I always assume a drive will last 2 YEARS MAX. Just buy a new drive once a year, always getting bigger, then copy the data and REPLACE the original disk with the new disk. You can use the older disk as a backup. The alternative is to run the disk until it dies, and then find you've either not backed al all, or not recently or properly...
I advise 2 main disks, one for Windows and Programs, and one for Data/Doccuments/Media. Then upgrade them, alternately, every year. £50 a year will cover it (just got a 1.5TB for this). I then keep the largest 'old' drive as a spare/backup in the machine, and the next biggest as and 'off-site' backup (in the garage), in case of fire or theft of the PC.
I also stick a label on, noting the date puchased and from where, and then note it's history as it's moved about, or gives any problems.

In reply to Message (47905) O/T (I guess) External Hard drive problems! PLEASE HELP!
By wetlookstu - Tue 14/12/10 15:01:42 GMT Website: twitter.com/wetlookstu Hey guys,
Hope you don't mind me posting this. But I am in urgent need of your help and I would imagine some of you have had similar issues
I have a Western Digital harddrive (500gb) and have had it for about 4 years. On it is loads and loads of movies, music, photos, and of course, wetlook. Lots and lots of wetlook. God knows how much money is on there in terms of subscriptions to leon's sites, flaviu's pool parties, wetlook hunter, MostWet, streetsplash public etc etc.
Recently, the worst thing that could possibly happen happened...it died. But I dont know why. It seems like it just happened overnight with no prompting. Usually when you plug it in, it makes some initial whirring noises, then the light lights up and it begins to whir some more and kicks into life. But now all it does is make the initial whirring noise but then never comes to life.
So i'm stuck! Does anyone know what the problem is? Is stuff savable? What steps can i do? Some mates have said i should take it to PC World or something, but I'm a bit conscious of the fact i have downloaded films and wetlook on there - so I'm a bit worried about that.
I would be eternally grateful for any help you guys could give.
Thanks, here's hoping for good news
Stu
