Graham called me to give me the news of Kev's death a few moments ago.  The news wasn't unexpected, as Kev had been seriously ill with cancer for well over a year.  When I last saw him 3 weeks ago at a Styx video shoot, he was in extreme discomfort and pain and looked very ill.

Thankfully, he was able to make into the pool house for some of the shoots, and you could tell that he was looking on with a discerning eye - even though he might not have been holding the camera himself.

I began my association with Styx back in 2003, meeting up with Graham (and Mrs Graham) for a pub lunch.  The following year I met with Kev when I (and Mrs Denzo) were invited to join the team for a video shoot in a delightful part of East Sussex.  Paul (the lazy one) was also there.

We were soon all enrolled into providing help ranging from directing the water rain machine onto the models (and watching their lips turn blue) to being allowed to video the photoshoots for future release onto the Styx website.  Mrs Denzo assisted mrs Graham in the wardrobe department as well as with the catering (as the shoots took place over an entire weekend).  The Saturday evening would find us all down at the local pub enjoying ale and good food.  Very, very happy memories.

Kev knew what he wanted from the models and directed them with a warm, friendly manner in order to try to get the best out of them.  It became clear to me just how much hard work goes into making an eight minute video - particularly when using models who have no appreciation of the wetlook fetish (unlike our dear Margareth).

Around Christmas time we all meet for our Styx dinner, and Kev would always make the journey down south to join us, staying overnight at Graham's or at ours.  Kev loved his full English breakfast, and greatly appreciated the slices of black pudding that Mrs Denzo served up for him.

The weekend of the last Styx video shoot in August was a wet and windy one.  Kev had arrived on the Friday evening and, because of a mess-up with the hotel booking, decided to camp in the grounds of the venue.  when Mrs Denzo and I arrived on site, Kev was resting in his tent.  There wasn't much for me to do prior to the video being shot and so I went down to visit Kev in his tent.

Characteristically, he was sitting there with a cigarette and with a cup of tea brewing.  We had a good half-hour chat where we discussed his illness and his approach to dying.  He knew that he was nearing the end of his days and was approaching his fate with courage, a level head and with a stoicism that left me in awe.

At the end of the shoot, when we were all saying our good-byes, I knew that it was likely to be the last time that I would shake Kev's hand.  His parting words to me were "enjoy the rest of your life".

Some of Kev's earlier posts on this forum ended up with a 'sign-off' that summed him up to a tee, and this is:-

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways -  body thoroughly used up - totally worn out and screaming "whoo hoo what a ride"! "

Thanks for your friendship, Kev, and for bringing a dimension to my life which has introduced me and Mrs Denzo to wetlook lovers throughout the world.  May you rest in peace.

I'm sorry to have to break some sad news to you all. After a courageous battle against stomach cancer for almost 2 years, Kev Toone passed away peacefully this morning at 11am. Kev was the owner/founder of Styx Photography and StyxWetWorld, and a co-founder (with me) of 'the other' forum.

A few of you will have known about Kev's illness, but most would not have been aware. That's because Kev wanted it to be that way. He was determined to be independent and not to be a burden to anyone. During the last 2 years he's never complained, despite some difficult and lengthy treatment. He just kept pushing on and working hard, in an effort to carry on with life even though he knew (almost a year ago) that he was not going to beat the disease. His determination meant he survived almost a year longer than the doctors had initially suggested. This gave him plenty of time to plan things, to spend a lot of time with his son - touring Europe and "living life to the full" in Kev's normal way. The last 2 weeks have been particularly difficult. His health declined rapidly, secondary liver cancer was detected and then he had a stroke at the beginning of this week. Its always sad to lose anyone, but it is particularly hard when someone's only in their 50s and has been survived by their parents.

This year is the 20th anniversary of when Kev started Styx Photography. I've only known Kev for the last 8 years, and have had the pleasure of working with him since then. Our first tentative meeting (in a motorway service station halfway between us) was where we first discussed the StyxWetWorld website by combining our different skills and a common interest. We immediately became friends, started StyxWetWorld in January 2003, and then proceeded to work together in various ways since then. Thanks to Kev, I picked up a lot of new photographic and video skills and worked with a good teacher. And, in turn, he was helped by my web/technical knowledge (and by my wife's wardrobe choices and purchasing skills!). A great partnership and we wouldn't have missed it for the world.

Just three weeks ago the "Styx Crew" got together for what we knew was Kev's final shoot, at one of our favourite locations in the south of the UK. Despite the pain he was in, he put on a brave face and helped and advised where he could. On that Saturday evening, and Kev dosed with painkillers, we all ate and drank together. Kev still had that determination, spark and cheeky grin that we've all come to enjoy while working together on shoots.

We are all going to miss him! Our thoughts are now with his family.
Graham (and 'Mrs Graham')

PS - for those of you with StyxWetWorld memberships, you need not be concerned. As you can tell, for some time we've known that this day was coming and plans have been made accordingly. There is PLENTY of material and the site will continue. I'll post more information regarding the site in a few days' time.
