Thanks Anthony. Yes the settings were progressive, but I wasn't sure if the software glitched and reverted at some stage- but having checked the clip through another application I cannot detect any interlacing throughout.
As an confirmed Apple user, I sometimes struggle with PC settings and software- I've done the DivX on a PC. I only use the PC as a "pennance"- whenever I get overexcited about something I sentence my self to either cold showers, self flagellation or a week using a PC : ) Using a PC with Microshit based software is the ultimate punishment!
At the moment I'm using a sharp bicubic resize filter, I'm going to try this at a lower setting, maybe neutral, to see if this removes the aliasing problem.
I'm very pleased with the quality compared to the MPEG1's we use and would love to use this format on the members' site for downloads. However if it's going to create problems for people (freezing) then we might have to reconsider.
It's great quality for the style of wetlook Styx produces (lots of close up- "money" shots) as it shows every wet thread of a garment. However if it creates problems for people then we might have to compromise quality for the sake of compatablity.
Might decide to post DivX, MPEGS and wmv's to cope with all eventualties. I think a lot is dependant on the processing capabilites of the decoding machine rather than the codec itself- MPEG1's use very little cpu capacity, DivX uses loads. |

By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Thu 03/07/03 23:05:31 GMT Kev, if you are referring to fredaa's comment that it "seems to be a little interlaced", I'd like to suggest that video is either formatted as interlaced or progressive; there's no "a little" of one or the other, so fredaa was perhaps referring to the same "staircasing" effect I reported. The staircasing has nothing to do with interlacing; it's an artifact created due to the way an image is rasterized (into discrete scan lines) and then reassembled. I believed the only way to get rid of it is to interpolate additional pixels and/or scan lines (resampling/line doubling) - something that has to happen in the player. I don't think there is anything you could do about it in encoding, other than perhaps add some blur, which would reduce the image sharpness (perhaps not desirable).

By Kev - kev.styx@ntlworld.com Thu 03/07/03 16:18:51 GMT For the feedback, it's very useful to find out how it plays for different people.
The movie was encoded in progessive mode, so I'm not sure how any interlacing has come about- but I'll check into that.
The pause/freeze isn't apparent on my version, but DivX is cpu intensive, so I'll check with some other applications running in the background.
I do have some more tweaks to make to optimise the quality and think I might also be able to reduce the file size a little too- this might ease the freezing problem.
Steve, what cpu are you running- is it the coal powered computer with a big hard drive?
Out of all the people(possibly hundreds by now- I haven't checked the log files) who have downloaded the movie- a special thanks to the handful who have bothered to help me with their feedback.
No doubt, if we do move over to this standard, we will then get complaints from loads of people who can't get it to work properly...........having missed their chance now because they can't be bothered |
In reply to Message (4533) free test movie
By Kev - kev.styx@ntlworld.com Thu 03/07/03 05:45:32 GMT Website: www.styxfreeworld.com have just posted a short (around 30 seconds) DivX movie to the freesite- it's on the video page.
As you know I have been experimenting with DivX to improve the quality of the movies we have available for download. I'm about 90% of the way to getting the optimum we want to put on the members' site.
Please take a look and let us know what you think- particularly when viewed full screen.
For Styx memebers this clip is taken from part 1 of the "Mackenzie" clip- you can compare the existing mpeg with the DivX and let us know your feelings as to whether it would be good to move over to this format.
I will be posting more free clips in the next few weeks as I gradually improve the quality.
