This has been very useful to me.
To play at 640 pixels with no post-processing DivX recommends a Pentium 2 running at 450Mhz, plus DirectX 7.
To run at larger screen sizes with maximum post processing would possibly need something like a 800Mhz plus cpu with a decent graphics card (Nvidea MX2 or better)
Maybe it would be best to work as follows:
From August onwards we will introduce DivX alongside the MPEG1's and WMV's. From January we will drop the MPEG1's and continue with just DivX and WMV's (primarily for the dial up members) This will give people 5 months to make any changes neccesary to cope with the better quality.
We think the changes will bring real benefits to our members, the quality is great for wetlook as it really does justice to the wet clothing. The cost of any changes to systems would be tiny, the specification required is very very low by todays standards. Any upgrades would allow you also to view other DivX's produced by other producers.
DivX is set to become the de-facto standard for almost all high quality movie streams in the future, so it would be a worthwhile change to make, not just for Styx material, but for other peoples' material too. If you can download DVD quality material, just think how much you could save on buying DVD's and tapes- the savings would easily pay for any computer upgrades.
Once again, thanks to those of you who have taken the time to help out.
Oh, and Steve, it looks like you have just 5 months to attain a state of perfection....LOL |

By Max - max_2@poczta.fm Sat 05/07/03 12:52:14 GMT Very good picture and sound quality. Average CPU time used: 38% without any postprocessing, 53% with low, 60% with high quality postprocessing, on Celeron 800, NVidia Geforce 256, using mplayer on Linux. I think the clip format is perfect for people having at least Celeron 600 and graphics card that supports YUV overlay (any modern card), but on older and slower hardware frame drops, A/V desynchronization and other problems may appear. |

By Kev - kev.styx@ntlworld.com Thu 03/07/03 05:45:32 GMT Website: www.styxfreeworld.com have just posted a short (around 30 seconds) DivX movie to the freesite- it's on the video page.
As you know I have been experimenting with DivX to improve the quality of the movies we have available for download. I'm about 90% of the way to getting the optimum we want to put on the members' site.
Please take a look and let us know what you think- particularly when viewed full screen.
For Styx memebers this clip is taken from part 1 of the "Mackenzie" clip- you can compare the existing mpeg with the DivX and let us know your feelings as to whether it would be good to move over to this format.
I will be posting more free clips in the next few weeks as I gradually improve the quality.
